CARE Fertility Northampton - IVF & ICSI results and success rates

Understand Results & Success Rates

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) publish success rates for every licensed clinic in the UK every quarter of the year. They present the number of treatment cycles carried out in a particular year, as well as the number of clinical pregnancies and live births.

Please bear in mind that success rates have their limitations when used to compare your own experiences or personal choices. Various things can affect your success rates, such as:

We always provide you with the most up to date and transparent information, which you can also find on the HFEA website.

We understand that the results tables and statements made by clinics can be confusing, particularly if you are just setting out on your IVF journey. The two main measures of an IVF clinic's success rate, as recommended on the HFEA website, are how likely a treatment cycle will lead to a clinical pregnancy, and how likely each embryo that is transferred during treatment will lead to a clinical pregnancy. An IVF clinic that can achieve a pregnancy with just one good quality embryo is better than one where they have to use two, therefore the success rates per embryo transferred are a better indicator of the quality and selection of embryos. When a pregnancy is achieved with the transfer of a single embryo, this reduces the risk of a multiple pregnancy which is safer for the mother and the baby.

CARE will consider all enquiring patients without judgement of circumstance or medical complexity as we believe everyone should have the chance to be heard and advised. We often treat medically complex patients that other clinics have referred to us, as they do not have the expertise. Treating such complicated fertility cases may affect our overall success results. That's why we highly recommend that you meet with our consultants to gain an accurate understanding on your very best chance of success. Feel free to get in touch for more information.

Terminology

Clinical Pregnancy (CP): An ultrasound scan has successfully found at least one foetal heartbeat. This is at around 6 weeks of pregnancy.

Treatment Cycle: A treatment cycle starts when a woman begins taking fertility drugs to stimulate egg production.

Fresh Transfer: The eggs collected are mixed with fresh sperm to produce embryos. Embryos are then incubated in the laboratory for up to five days and then the best embryo(s) are transferred back to the patient.

Frozen Embryo Transfer: After the eggs and sperm are mixed to produce embryos, embryos not selected for a fresh transfer can be frozen for future use. The embryos are thawed and transferred to the patient when the patient is ready for further treatment.

Per cycle started: Number of treatment cycles that have resulted in a clinical pregnancy or live birth shown as a percentage. This will also include any cycles which may have been cancelled before the egg collection or embryo transfer stage.

Per embryo transferred: Number of embryos transferred resulting in a pregnancy or live birth shown as a percentage. It takes into account how many embryos have been transferred in a cycle. These success rates can appear lower than 'per cycle' because two embryos can be transferred in some cycles.
