Hi i know i am not a male, but i need advice from a male in a similar situation.
My DP has a very low sperm count (2mil), and low motality, and when i went to see the gyne consultant last week, he said he will be referring my partner to an andrologist who specialises in problems with the quality and quantity of sperm.
But he also said that we will definetly need IVF.
Is there anyone on here who have been referred to the andrologist AND been referred for IVF at the same time?
I mean will we have to wait to be put on the IVF waiting list until my DP has had all the tests with the andrologist?
thanks |

| My DH had to go to an andrologist. This was many years ago, so can't remember much, other than they found the root cause of his infertility, which was Kleinfelters syndrome and therefore producing zero sperm. However I believe low sperm count does not necessarily mean you cannot conceive through IVF. There is now quite a lot that can be done, such as ICSI and IVF, depending on sperm quality etc. Even with my DH they could have done a biospy of the testes to see if any sperm could be retrieved for use in ICSI and IVF - even men with KF have conceived through this. As it is we ended up going for donor sperm, but the andrologist will give you the options available. Also if there is no sperm detectable in sample, they can do something called a MERC test. Unfortunately for us, this test didn't reveal anything either. Good Luck!!! |

Hi, thanks for your reply. I actually forgot that i posted here lol.
It turns out that we go to see the sperm specialist in 4 weeks, then after theyve done the tests we can get referred for ivf. so this is why we are starting with the egg share scheme now.
i think what has caused my dp to have little amount of sperm is when he was born his testicles were too high up, so had to have lots of operations. It runs in his family, his uncle had it, and his grandfather.
the consultant last month said he doesnt think there is anything the andrologist can do for him, but its worth a try.
thanks |
