Hello,

I need intralipids between cd 1 and 7 and have been told it's a IV that someone will administer.

So, will someone be coming into my home and sitting with me until it's done?

How long does it take?

Is there any big equipment they use? xx

Hiya,

It takes about 2.5 hrs to administer from what I remember and, yes, the nurse stays with you so get a good film ready or just chat if they're nice. I found the nurses to be fab and had two ladies and a man (had extra intralipid I've once I got a bfp). You will have a cannula in the hand and it's attached to the line with the intralipids hung from a stand but you can move about. It's not too bulky to stop you lifting it up and going to the loo which was good because on the visit I was pg I was going to the loo loads!

Good luck.

Helen x

Hiya Helen, thanks for the reply - your kids are cuties Wink

Gosh 2.5 hours is a hell of a long time to have a stranger in your house! I'm really funny about people in my house, i'm a bit territorial and a bit of a control freak lol

Can you eat while on the IV? That might kill some time Smile

Hiya!
I know it does feel a bit strange at first. I can't remember if you can eat - I think so but don't remember eating. Hopefully someone else will be able to come along and answer that!
It feels really cold as they're going in which can reduce your body temp so wear warm clothes. It's honestly nothing to worry about though and I didn't ever have any side effects.

Hi Louise

Yes you can eat and drink, carry on as normal Smile

As Helen has said, if you are arranging it through Healthcare at home you call them to arrange the date you want the nurse to come and you will also arrange a date to have the medication dropped off as the nurse will not bring it with her / him ( she / he will bring the drip stand / needles etc) The nurse will call you the night before to let you know what time she / he will be coming (all HAH will arrange is whether morning or afternoon) Wear a jumper / something over your arms to keep them warm so its easier for the nurse to administer the drip. I have had 2 done by 2 different nurses and both have been excellent. It does take around 2 to 2.5 hours but it goes really quick. The nurses realise they are coming into your home and will happily chat or just sit there watching the telly, reading a book etc, its really up to you. You can move around (just have to drag the drip stand with you) but you will feel cold and will feel it circulating through your body. I had no side affects, just needed the loo quite often as its liquid being pumped into you and felt tired afterwards.

Hope this helps, you will be fine Smile

Hi Louise

I think the others have covered everything. I had all 3 of mine done on the inside of my elbow (same place as a blood test) not my hand. My Mum came round for all them too. She made the nurse a cup of tea and things. Plus she was good for creating conversation with a stranger. (I had 2 ladies and man). I also never stood up, I stayed on the sofa with my feet up for the 2 and a half hours. You can eat and drink, but I was too scared to move m arm too much and also didn;t want to have to go to the toilet either.

I had the drugs delivered to my work a few days before hand which made it easier

It is a bit daunting, the the nurses were all really professional and put me at ease. Plus you've just got to keep remembering why your doing it

Dianne

Hi

I will need this for my next tratment is there any way that the nurse can go to the hospital and not my home . As I live with my husband's family and don't want them to know about my treatment .

Thanks in advance

Hi Saj,

I'm afraid that you won't be able to get the private nurse to go to a hospital to administer the Intralipids for you (NHS or private hospitals do not 'hire' out room/space to you). You could perhaps try to have it done at a friend's house or try asking your IVF clinic if they could allow you have somewhere in the clinic to have the Intralipids done.

Good Luck.

Saj, I have known people have it done in hotel rooms, but obviously that is an added expense.

Hi there. I've just been told that I will be having Intralipids so just trying to get as much information as possible. I've read about how it's administered etc but I was just wondering how you go about booking a nurse to come to your house. Do you arrange it through your clinic where you are having treatment? I live 300 miles away from mine so I arrange a lot of tests locally. Is it costly to arrange for someone to come to the house? I know I will probably get all this information in about another week when my protocol arrives but just interested in any information I can get x

Hi Rusty,

Your clinic will arrange for Healthcare at Home (the one that they use to supply their IVF ladies with IVF drugs) to give you a ring a week or two before you are due for the intralipids infusion ... but sometimes you will have to chase your clinic up (as sometimes, they forget or they leave it too late for one's liking - ending in restricted day-slots for the infusion to take place)!

A suitable day is arranged between you and Healthcare at Home for the nurse to come round to adminster the intralipids (and the delivery of the intralipids). The day/night before the pre-arranged day, you will get a call from a nurse who will arrange with you a convenient time-slot for her to come round to adminster the intralipids at your home.

Good Luck!
