Hello all, I am a newbie to all of this, so I would really appreciate your help.
I had a blood test for CMV and the result said "antibody not detected".
This may sound a bit thick of me to ask, but does it mean I am CMV+ OR CMV- as the waiting list for egg donors depends on your result. So for CMV pos its 3 months, and CMV neg its 6 months.
I am so confused.com |

Hi Pray and Hope,
I wonder if you would consider accepting a CMV+ donor. Many CMV- recipients do as the risks of problems are extremely low. But it will reduce your waiting time.
Good luck,
Maple

Hiya,
You can sign a waiver to accept a positive donor, if you are negative, worth asking your clinic to explain it. The risk apparently is tiny.
But, saying that me and DH were negative and chose to wait for a negative donor.
All the best, exciting times ahead for you!!

Charlie,
Has highlighted a point ... sometimes CMV- recipient's partner is CMV+ and it doesn't cause any problems.

Hi Pray and Hope,
I am CMV negative but accepted a positive donor, and I had a successful outcome. I believe that the HFEA are now considering scrapping the test as they don't think it has any relevence. Overseas clinics don't generally screen for it.
Good luck!

No problems Pray and Hope.
But it might be worth asking your clinic to send you some information about the risks, before you consent to it. Best to be informed than to go in blindly.

Caroline is right, most overseas clinics no longer consider it to be an issue and so no longer test/match for it.

Hi P&H,
As Charlie says you can sign a waiver for a donor who is CMV+. The risk comes because the infection is spread via bodily fluids, so there is a very very small chance you may catch CMV when the embryo is transferred. CMV almost never has any symptoms or ill effects if you do catch it as a healthy adult. However if it is first time activated in someone who previously was CMV- and some sypmtoms did arise there is a tiny risk the baby could have birth defects. There is also a tiny risk from the infection to babies who catch CMV from their mother.
The risk really is tiny as around 60-80% of adults are though to be CMV+ and it is not considered a risk in most preganancies or in breast feeding mothers to the infant. You could catch CMV anyway during pregnancy!
So you would need to consider whether you thought the risk outweighed the time delay.
Good luck for the future xx |

Pray and Hope - Phoenix has explained it really well!
Phoenix - your post is very informative, so the (few seconds of) lateness is well worth it!
All the best!

Thanks ladies, Dr Wikipedia is the source lol - I looked it up when I ES (as a donor) as I had never even heard of CMV so wondered why they were testing for it! I never really mention this as a test to other potential donors as it is more confusing than its worth - it really doesn't matter if you are CMV+ or CMV-.
Maple - I've cross posted with you a few time but have never really chatted. I just want to wish you lots of luck, you sound like you've had a tough time and I'm rooting for you. I also see all the help you give other ladies on these boards which is amazing - you should write a book xx |

Hi Phoenix,
Thanks for you lovely kind words. I have read many of your informative and knowledgeable posts too ... you have learnt so much in a relatively short time! It's wonderful to see ladies like you helping/advising and support other ladies.
I am only repaying in my own way for all help and support that I have received from other ladies over the years. I just wish that I haven't had to gain so much knowledge over the many years in my search for the holy grail for success!
But if I can help a few ladies along the way ... then my journey so far wouldn't have been totally wasted.
I am embarking the hardest part of my journey at the moment ... I have never experienced anything as stressful and difficult in my life ... I really hope that nobody else has to endure this.
I want to thank you (and other wonderful donors) from the bottom of my heart, for giving ladies like me a chance of having a baby of our own ... such an amazing gift!
I hope you enjoy a healthy and happy rest of your pregnancy.
All the best!
Love,
Maple

Maple,
I really hope that this most challanging part of your journey will work out, and if there is anything we ladies can do to help you know everyone will be here for you.
I feel just the same as you about imparting any knowledge I have picked up to others - we have been so lucky so far I just want to try and help. I did a science degree and have an analytical type brain (or a geek to use another term lol) so learning as much about the subject as possible really helped me deal with the IVF. In my current job in finance I'm also used to picking up the saliant points from large chunks of info lol so helps with condensing it for the boards!
In terms of the donation again just want to help - IF has so many negative consequences and I felt so awful at times. I never want anyone else to feel like that and I can help in at least a small way by donating. I'll be sharing again and no doubt donating after that until I'm too old
Lots of positive wishes your way
Love
Phoenix xx |

Thanks Phoenix.
Your knowledge will help many who are/will be treading the path of IF. I do get so much satisfaction seeing ladies succeed and would like to think that I have contributed in some way (however tiny the contribution).
It is so amazingly generous and selfless of you for wanting to continue ES/donating ... you are truly a wonderful and special lady. I'd like to thank you again on behalf of the recipients.
I will be keeping my beady eye on you ... looking forward to see a picture of your special miracle on your signature, in a few months time!
Take care,
Maple
