Hi Ladies...
Apologies in advance if this has already been explained in past posts, but I would please appriciate if someone could explain to me the process of what happens & when, in the plight to become a single parent.
My Name is Charlotte, I'm 33 & am already a single mum to Charlie who is 8.
I desperately want to have more children, although not particularly desperate to have a DH
I am not aware of any fertility problems, I fell pregnant with DS very quickly, although I was only 23 at the time.
I would need a donor sperm.
What I really want to know, is as I'm not aware of any issue with my body that could prevent me getting pregnant, what would the process be? Would it be ICSI, IVF? Throw it in & hope for the best?
I've tried doing research, but still not quite sure on what the path would be if it simply needs help 'getting in'?
I'd love any advice anyone could give me, as I'm hoping to start the process as soon as possible!
Thanks, Charlotte |

Thank you so so much...I realy appriciate you taking the time to reply to me & giving me all that information!!
I always think that these things should come with an idiots guide!
Just another quick question, I keep hearing people referring to the 'screening' tests, I've looked everywhere but can't find what is actually screened for? Is It just all the normal STD's etc?
Thanks again & congratulations on your baby girl! xxx |

Hi Charliegirl, I know your desire for a second child. I was your age when I decided to try for a baby (although I didn't have any children already). I went through all the tests and egg shared, using donor sperm. I decided for IVF with egg share rather than IUI as the chances of success were higher with IVF than IUI.
I was successful second time around and both of my recipients were successful.
I'm half way through my 4th cycle now, hoping to try for a sibling for my DS. It's a tough road and very emotional, but well worth it if you get the results!
Somedaysoon has given you all the good info, I don't think there's much to add, but if you have any questions, do ask!
Good luck!
Wendy xx |

Thank you so much Wendy...its good to know there are other ladies like me around! The trouble with having babies is that you just want more, lol...!
Did you self refer? I have just done this to Northampton, (Milton Keynes & peterborough were both closer for me, but I think Northampton is the closest to do egg share?) ....I'm waiting to hear, do you know how long it takes for them to get in touch with you? & then how long for an apt?
Also, on your first apt what was actually done? Was it just a chat or were there tests etc? Sorry...sooo amny questions! |

Charlie, when I referred to Care it was almost 4 years ago and I had to get my GP to do it (I went to an understanding young female GP). I think you can self refer now though. I don't think it took long for them to get in touch, although I was quite proactive and initiated contact I think. I got my counselling and initial consultation reasonably quickly. I think my first consultation was May and I started treatment in the August (which included egg share, as it took about a month for the blood test results to come back from that).
I think my first appt was for an antral folicle scan (I had just missed day 3 for an FSH blood test) and I then had a consultation with the Doctor. I took a huge list of questions and had initially intended to have IUI, but when I spoke to him, he mentioned the IVF with egg share and said that IVF has a better success rate than IUI. I then notified them that I wanted to egg share and I went in again for all the blood tests and combined that with the counselling session (which you have to have if you're using donor sperm or donating eggs).
I think I waited about 4 weeks for all results (they didn't actually give me any results as they were all clear, so it was a case of no news is good news) and the day they rang me, they'd both matched me with a sperm donor and an egg recipient, which I think was about the July time and I had to then wait for day 21 after my next AF had started (which was the August), and treatment went into September.
Best thing you can do is to write all your questions down to take with you for your consultation.
Good luck

Thanks so much Wendy, I do appriciate your patience with me!
Care got in touch on Wednesday, I need to see the Donation Nurse for the sperm, a counsellor & the Dr, she explained that there was a long wait for the donation nurse, so i'm looking at the first week in August. She explained that it really is best to see then in the order i've written above, but as the wait for the other 2 isn't so long & I live a bit of a distance away she can make the appointments all on the same day, which is great!
A question that I've asked before is, would it be easier, because August is a way away, to have the bloods done at care between now & August, so the Dr has all the results before my apt & I don't then have to wait for it afterwards?
What do you think, having been there & done it?
Thanks again x |

Hi
Just been reading all the great info you have been given but just noticed you asked about bloods, we were lucky and our GP did the ones she could ( free as well!) so worth checking exactly what you need and asking your GP, saves money and time of travelling to clinic, GPs cant do all bloods though but they certainly did our HIV, Hep etc and my hormone levels.
Good luck with it xx |

Hi
I wonder if anyone can give me any advice. I had the fantastic news today that I have been matched to a new donor. I was told that my notes would be passed from embriology back to my consultant on Monday and i would have to wait a couple of weeks for my protocol.
I understand that a protocol is a written explanation of what happens next, but I still dont fuly understand what it is. I know that this sounds a really silly question but its taken me so long (nearly 2 years) to get here and I want a clearer picture of roughly how much longer and how many hoops i need to jump before I can finally begin 'trying'!
Thanks in advance
