Hi ladies

We had our 20 week scan yesterday - it was amazing -baby has grown and is doing well, heart beating strong and lots of movement! So that was a relief of course.

The sonographer mentioned (had to mention I suppose) that one of baby's kidneys was "a bit full". She assured us that it is nothing to worry about but to err on the side of caution they are bringing me back for another scan at 28 weeks to check that it's improved. She says it may just be that baby needed to wee and at worst if it does not improve it would mean baby would need a course of antibiotics soon after birth. I hate the idea of antibiotics at the best of times so would be quite unhappy if he/ she needed them so soon after being born........

But I suppose if that's the worst thing we need to contend with I should be grateful!! I'm an IVF mum, I'm wired to worry!!! Smile Or is that just me?

Anyone heard of this or experienced anything similar?

thanks v much

Love
H xx

Hi H,
You are right. You are wired to worry. This process makes us like that!

I didn't have exactly the same thing with DS but something similar. We were told that it looked like one of his tubes leading from one kidney wasnt properly developed. I was a bit later on than you. Of course you google like mad and panic. They scanned me again every two weeks (mainly because he was very large) but also to check on the kidneys. They then organised a scan for 4 weeks after he was born.
Everything was clear and working normally. Strangely enough, instinctively I knew it would be.

Just remember that these scans dont always give an accurate picture. They are a moment in time. As your sonographer said baby might just have been waiting to have a wee.

Fingers crossed that your 28 week scan is perfect.
Stay away from Google!!

Jacquie xx

Helena - I've heard of this too - they are concerned if the wee pipe from kidney to bladder is developed normally. If it persists they often scan again after birth and the vast majority is totally normal!! Doesn't stop you worrying though I know. I actually am not surprised - the scans are good but not that accurate - in fact my scan today on nhs was no where near as clear as any of our private ones we've had to date - I think they just can't afford to swap equipment as often etc. so I really wouldn't less it stress you out. Keep healthy yourself and keep talking to it - after all like you've said you've reserved a place on earth for it so it's coming home to you guys & will defo be fine!!

Thanks for helping put my mind at rest, ladies. Scan didn't reveal any developmental issues at all - just one little too full kidney! So like you say Jacquie, these scans reveal a snapshot of a moment in time.

My instinct is telling me too that baby will be fine!

Hiya Helena,

I didnt experience the same Issue as yourself but my son was put straight on antibiotics after birth for 5 days as a precaution due to a traumatic birth and yes I was distraught at the time that he had to go through that but he was absolutely fine and is a happy healthy 3 year old so don't worry. If your baby did need antibiotics they'll be fine Smile

Love Kitty xxxx

I haven't been on these boards for ages but had a look around today just to see how people are gettin on. I just had to reply to you to help put your mind at rest. I had a baby 5 months ago and when I was 34 weeks pregnant I had a scan that showed exactly the same as yours. When my baby was born she had an ultrasound at a day old which showed the same problem. She had a low dose of antibiotics every day for three months when she had another ultrasound. This time the problem was worse but still not serious. Then she had a more invasive test to check for bladder reflux which came back as normal. I am awaiting an appointment to see what we do next. She is still on antibiotics.

Our consultant tells me that she may still grow out of it, most grow out of it by three months, and almost all the rest by one year. It is very rarely anything serious. The only problem can be that where there is a collection of urine that is going nowhere, an infection can occur. Babies can get very sick very fast, hence the prophylactic antibiotics.
