Looking for advice to see if there is anything we can take or eat in our daily diet to prevent and reduce the chances of getting a cold. LO and me have yet another cold, last one was end of May just as we were finishing a week's holiday in UK, we are about to go to Isle of Man for a weekend and just starting another. LO has had it since Thursday night and won't sleep for more than an hour or so, as a result I am exhausted and can feel it starting in my throat (I'm probably so run down).
My older son and DH always end up catching it too, my DH helps where he can but with his job and his own poor ability to sleep it is not fair to ask him to get up with baby in the night. He would at weekends but typical that he has been away on a one off stag do this weekend.
Fortunately I am on maternity leave still but go back to work at beginning of Sept. How on earth will I cope then? This is about the 6th cold I've had in 8 months, I eat a good diet. I am at the point of not wanting to go anywhere so I don't pick any more colds up. I am rambling now cos I'm so tired and frustrated. Sorry, Any advice welcome.

awwww bless you. this may sound crazy... but how are you with housework? I know it sounds mad, but 2 of my friends who have VERY clean houses and always cleaning and bleaching etc etc are always ALWAYS ill, coughs, colds, bugs ALL the time. I laugh and say "your house is sooooo clean that as soon as you hit the outside air you get ill!!!" Honestly I'm sure this is why they are always ill. where as me who is allergic to housework.... we hardly ever get ill Embarassed Mr. Green

just a thought....

Get well soon

Oh you poor thing. I can sense the tiredness in your post.
Unfortunately I dont think there is much you can do to stop you all sharing the bugs. I remember DS's first year. I have never been so ill. I was poorly on and off for most of the second half of his first year.
The only things I can suggest are ways of making it easier for your DD to sleep when she has a cold and hence you getting more sleep. I have propped my DD's cot up on books at one end to help her to breathe more easily. I also sometimes put a tissue with Olbas oil on into her pillow case. I also find that a bowl of hot water with a couple of drops of Olbas oil help them breathe better when they are bunged up. I take every opportunity to open her bedroom window and let some fresh air in which seems to help keep the bugs at bay.
When you have one cold after another you automatically get run down and so your resistance is probably quite low. Have you tried a daily multivitamin? It might help.
I wish I had a magic wand for you. I hope you and she recover quickly.

Hi Stargazer

We too are suffering constantly. Problem is as a baby/toddler DS had very little then when he started nursery around 3 - he's had all sorts. Just finished antibiotics for tonsilitis last Thursday and bless him he's started with a real rasping cough over the weekend and now a temp again. He's really crabby and thoroughly fed up - and I'm kn*ckered!

Echinacea (spl???) is something you can take that helps immunity but don't know about little one - just check if your BF as well - cos not sure if it will affect little one. Oh and you can only take for short bursts - it's not a long term thing but speak to the advisors in somewhere like Holland & Barrett - they'll advise. I can't use it as I'm diabetic! Another one is Garlic tablets help the immunity apparently - but it has to be the smelly ones Smile!

If LO's nose is blocked - saline drops are brill for my DS.

It might help if we had actually had some summer!!! Long may today's weather continue!

After not sleeping all day yesterday except for a short mid morning nap I put her in her cot at 9pm and she slept for about an hour! I couldn't believe it, hubby had put hanky with olbas oil in her room and windows were open etc etc and I really thought she would have a good sleep. So it was back in the spare room with me and she slept propped up for the rest of the night so we have finally had a good eight hours.
Thanks Jacquie I will try vitamins and ask about Echinacea Robbo, it's me that's had all the colds, this is Lucy's first. Robbo it is so tiring when they are ill, I can just about remember it with my boy!
Jacquie, Jumperoo has had loads of hammer, she loves it but she bounces that hard in it the seat fabric has started to rip so we will have to send it to Jumperoo in the sky when she's done with it (or the local tip) but it's been a really good buy.
Claire, when I started reading your reply I thought you were suggesting I wasn't cleaning enough lol! But you are right, I probably go OTT, well I haven't got any done the last few days so maybe I should ease off a bit.
Thanks x

So glad you finally got a good nights sleep. It makes the world a far better place!

You'll be just fine when you go back to work you know. You just cope somehow - even when the littlies keep you up for hours.

RIP Jumparoo! My two had some fab times in Jumparoo and I would recommend it to anyone. So glad that Lucy had some fun with it.

Hope you enjoy the warmer weather now and the bugs keep away.

Aw it's awful to hear the LO's snuffling away isn't it? I too found propping up the cot a good help for my daughter and the Karvol menthol plug ins you can get from Boots were an absolute godsend.

My Lucy LOVES her jumparoo and goes crazy in it, I do think she'll tear strips off it before too long!!

Hope you get some more sleep and you all feel better soon

Thanks SB and Jacqui, we are now over all the sniffles, DH has been putting Olbas Oil drops on a hanky and placing it out of reach of little fingers and she started to sleep well again. Those sleepless nights are a distant memory!! C x

Poor thing,I had a rough few months at the beginning o the year.

Try this http://www.boots.com/en/Metatone-Original-Flavour-tonic-500ml-_2321/
It's was brilliant - I was virtually swigging it straight from the bottle!

And yes echinea is brilliant. 3 people recommended before I listened and bought some.

I was on my knees with tiredness, trying to work and keep everything together but these 2 things helped me massively

Take care

Love h xxxx
