Hi all
I can't quite believe I have got this far and never cease to be amazed and count my blessings. I,m 37 weeks pregnant with a baby boy (after first IVF cycle). I have bought a Maxicosi car seat and don't know whether it is essential to have the base fitted into the car? they are quoting about £120.00 just for this which seems quite excessive and tell me it will only last for approx 1 year as need to upgrade it when the car seat no longer fits. Can anyone help me? |

| Hi F&L - no the base isn't essential. All car seats should be usable with the seat belt to hold it in place. The base just makes it less hassle as the seat clicks into it without having to use the belt at all xx |

I has the base with mine and wouldn't have been without it. While not essential as such, to me it was. Took seconds to pop seat into it rather than fiddle with a seatbelt. I knew it was correctly fitted each time no matter who put the seat in the car. Plus it was a bonus if it was raining cos its so quick lol. They are expensive to buy new but if you look on swapping and shopping, you may find one for sale. I sold mine on her recently for £30 so that would give you an idea of cost on here.
Ebay being another option if you didn't want to pay full price for a new one

Congratulations on your BFP
We had the maxicosi pebble car seat and family fix base. The next seat pearl fits on the same base. They've been fantastic and having the isofix base is a godsend!

| I would definitely recommend a base. it is so easy to do especially when raining etc! might seem alot of money but just think how much you go in and out of the car. good luck!xxx |

Hi
We had the maxi cosi cabrio fix and used it for one year - my son was on the 25th - 50th centile. I'm selling 2 bases and seat (if you want a spare cover) if you're interested.

Hi there,
Can be used perfectly safely without the base - which is what I did to start with, but having seen friends with bases I decided I would get one after getting soaked on a particularly memorable trip in the pouring rain!

Hi,
We didn't bother with a base for our seat as we wanted to use it in more than one car. We've got a Britax seat and it's so easy to strap in. We were going to see how things went with just the seatbelt and if it was no good we were going to buy the base, so you could always see how you go before you decide on the base. Also, I don't want to offend anyone but just a note about buying second hand. A car seat or base is the only thing that I personally wouldn't buy second hand as you wouldn't know if the seat/base had previously been involved in an accident. I'm sure the people on here are totally trustworthy, but there are other sites where people may be less than honest about these things. As I say, I don't mean to offend anyone but it's worth bearing in mind.

Hi
No offence Katy - I wouldn't buy a second hand seat either (but it would be handy to have a spare cover). I can assure you the bases and seat have never been dropped or in an accident. I find it frustrating that perfectly good seats and bases that cost a lot of money will end up in landfill.

there is a charity in sheffield that will take car seats that meet current leg and have them tested then they sell them on ....dont know name of it but its been going quite a while, i know cot-age in sheffield do similar as well(not sure if they take car seats though)
a car seat after 5yrs(i think it is) shouldnt be used anyway something to do with the materials degrading over time...... hubbys right up on that stuff ....

Ladies, as always I knew you would all come up trumps with your experiences and advice. I don't come on here that often but know its here which is very reassuring. Your answers have made me think a bit but basically know that I don't have to rush out to buy the base immediately but can wait until babe is here which is quite good as think I may be in the early stages of labour (no idea as its my first time but something is definately happening!!)
Best wishes to you all xxx |
