21 years of life at CARE Manchester

Happy 21st Birthday to CARE Manchester!

Our Manchester team have been helping to make babies  for 21 years, and though lots of how we work has changed and improved in that time, what has stayed the same is our love for what we do: helping patients grow their family with science and compassion.

In this blog, we look back on how CARE Manchester has grown in those 21 years, and share some of our favourite memories!

Our Clinic

So much has happened in our clinic on Daisy Bank Road in 21 years! Our Manchester team has pioneered world-leading science, including being the first UK clinic to use time-lapse imaging in embryo selection. The UK’s first time-lapse embryoscope baby, Bella, came to visit us eight years later to meet the team who helped to babysit her as an embryo! You can read more about Bella, as well as our very first Manchester CARE babies, the Davenport twins, in our 30,000 babies celebration blog post.

Our clinic has also kept up with the times, having a few renovations over the years – here is our waiting room when Daisy Bank Road first opened!

And here is Charmian Russell, our original ‘Unit Manager’, as they were known, with Carol, one of our first sonographers:

The technology we use to help make babies has significantly improved in the past 21 years – just take a look at our lab now!

Our Team

We have had so many wonderful people be part of our Manchester family over the years. One of the most well-loved was the late Dr Rashmi Patel, who used to play Indian sitar music during embryo transfer! Dr Patel believed that the calming music helped to relieve stress and tension for patients during their treatment, and that being relaxed and happy contributed to positive pregnancy outcomes.

"I am quite sure that the relaxing atmosphere in the treatment room played an important role in helping me to conceive," patient Trish said to the Bolton News after giving birth following one round of treatment with Dr Patel and the Manchester team.

Though some of our wonderful staff have sadly left us over the years, some of our team have been there since the very start! Below you can see Senior Secretary Alison Black and Julie Majekodunmi, part of our Reception team. This duo knows everything there is to know about CARE Manchester, and are an integral part of making sure our patients have the best experience possible with us. You can still meet Alison and Julie when you visit CARE Manchester today!

Our Favourite Memories

There have been so many incredible moments during the past 21 years! We love when patients bring their little ones into the clinic to meet the team, and we have had the pleasure of meeting so many Manchester CARE bears over the years, especially at our Gulliver’s World Theme Park celebrations! Here is an amazing CARE bear cake that one of our embryologists, Selina, made for our 30,000 babies party in 2019:

We also have such fond memories of the many times our CARE Manchester family has supported the local community. As part of our fundamental belief that ‘Family is for Everyone’, we are strong supporters of the LGBTQ+ community, and always have a fantastic time celebrating Manchester Pride. Can you spot Alison again in this photo?

We look back at all our amazing achievements from the past 21 years with such pride and happiness. Our incredible team has helped so many patients have the baby they wished for, and we will continue to do everything possible patients achieve their dream of family.

Here’s to the next 21 years of love, laughter and making life at CARE Manchester!
