Charlotte Swami

Charlotte completed her undergraduate degree and midwifery training at Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital and St Mary’s birth centre, graduating with a first-class honours from De Montfort University, Leicester in 2006.

Training

After completing her undergraduate degree and midwifery training, Charlotte then gained post qualification experience at Kettering General Hospital, before being appointed as Labour Ward Sister at Hinchingbrooke. Charlotte completed her post graduate midwifery study at Nottingham University in 2009.

Career

Charlotte joined a national training faculty on human factors with representatives from the airline industry, on patient safety in airway crisis, where she presented at the AFPP National Conference in 2009. Charlotte was appointed as Patient Safety Lead in 2014, at University Hospitals of Leicester across three large acute hospitals, where she also developed an interest in sepsis recognition and management.

Following an investigation into how operational processes impact patient safety, Charlotte was asked to lead a turnaround across endoscopy services, for which she worked with NHS Improvement, a role that she was commended for and asked to share her approach and experience at National NHS conference.

Charlotte since, has undertaken several senior leadership and turnaround roles in both the NHS acute and private sector in large private hospitals as CQC registered manager, working to improve clinical governance, patient experience, patient recall exercises, senior trust wide manager on call, quality standards, has led on significant capital build projects, county wide cancer and surgical performance (eradication of waiting lists beyond 18 weeks), operational and financial performance.

Charlotte was awarded a scholarship from the University of Warwick Business School on their global MBA degree programme in 2021.  

Memberships & Accreditations

Charlotte regularly guest lecturers on midwifery, sepsis, pharmacology, patient safety and clinical governance at conferences, and to students at De Montfort University, Leicester, Northampton University, and is a national trainer on the new Patient Safety Framework (PSIRF), and was invited to be an Honorary lecturer in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Leicester in 2023.

Charlotte was inaugural chair of the menopause network at Spire Healthcare, and is a passionate advocate for women’s health. Charlotte regularly mentor’s student midwives on the MSc in midwifery leadership, to support the future midwifery leadership workforce.
