Dale and I married in September 2016 after three years of being together. Having always been very career driven, I wanted a career in the police force before starting a family – believing I had all the time in the world! Not long after getting married, I began my police training in March 2017.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 2018, we began to think about a family and what the future may look like. We actively began to stop trying not to get pregnant and thought we would let fate decide. After 9 months, and no success, I began to worry about why it hadn’t happened yet.&nbsp;&nbsp;The stress began to take its toll on me, so we decided to pay for private fertility tests to try and figure out what the problem was and to see if it’s something we could resolve. We had our tests at Care Fertility Manchester after doing our research, they were a highly rated clinic, local to us, and very friendly when we spoke to them, so my mind was made up!&nbsp;&nbsp;The tests found that Dale has low sperm motility, so we began to do everything we could to improve it. He gave up smoking after 13 years of being a smoker, we began fertility medication, and tried all the old wife’s tales – pineapple juice, legs in the air, you name it and we tried it, but with no luck.&nbsp;&nbsp;By the end of 2018, we had been to our GP and were told to ‘stop stressing’ as we were both young and told it will happen.&nbsp;&nbsp;We were back at the doctors in 2019, and finally referred for tests on the NHS – even though we knew what our issue was, they had to be done again via the NHS to even stand a chance of receiving treatment on the NHS.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 2020, the tests were done, and as we already knew Dale's sperm motility was still low, and we were placed on the NHS waiting list for fertility treatment in 2021. By this point, we were both ecstatic as we had been trying for 3 years and were both totally deflated. It seemed that everyone around us was getting pregnant and having children so easily, it was heartbreaking.&nbsp;&nbsp;By mid-2021 we had our first appointment at Care Fertility Manchester, where we both had to undergo all the tests again to confirm our fertility issue and work out a treatment plan. This was the third time repeating these tests, by this point it seemed to be a repeatable cycle with no progress. After the tests, we discussed with the doctor who explained the IVF process and what we would do next. Finally, it was like things were moving forward and our excitement grew.&nbsp;I began the hormone medication in December 2022 with a view to monitoring my cycles, and then the injections began in early 2023. I completed the course of three daily injections and went for routine scans throughout the treatment. The first scan resulted in me being told my eggs were growing but to continue and I was given an increased dose to inject.&nbsp;&nbsp;Less than a week later I had another scan and was told that there was still only one follicle visible. I was told I could still proceed to egg collection with this one follicle or stop all treatment and try again on different medication, as I hadn't responded to this medication.&nbsp;I made the very difficult decision to stop all treatment. To say we were heartbroken would be an understatement, and by this point I began to wonder whether the issue was with me, and if carrying a child just wasn’t meant to be.&nbsp;&nbsp;We had discussed other options to expand our family, such as adoption, but deep down I knew I wanted to experience being pregnant and having a child of my own. I had to wait for my normal cycle to resume again and after three months, and a review with the doctor, we began another course of treatment to try and gain some follicles. For this cycle I was given an alternative medication but continued to inject three times a day. I tried not get my hopes up again, and when the scan came around, I was petrified. We walked into the treatment room ready to be told it hadn't worked again - but to our complete joy there were lots of follicles. We went ahead with the egg collection and were able to retrieve nine eggs, eight of which were fertilised.&nbsp;In March 2023, we had our first fresh transfer. I was convinced it had worked and thought that anything out of the ordinary was a symptom of being pregnant. However, 11 days later my period came. I still waited until test day, but I knew it hadn’t worked. The test was negative. We were both heart broken and decided to take some time to heal. We went on holiday, but things weren’t right. We’d stopped communicating and didn’t know how to help each other, so we decided to try counselling through Care Fertility Manchester.&nbsp;&nbsp;In August 2023, we felt ready to give it another try, so we had a second transfer but with a frozen embryo this time.&nbsp;&nbsp;The test was positive.&nbsp;&nbsp;We couldn't believe it, and it took some time to sink in! By the 6-week mark, we were ecstatic and began to share the news with our loved ones. I began to bleed, but after several scans and check-ups, everything was okay.&nbsp;&nbsp;My pregnancy was progressing normally, and I loved every second – despite the sickness! However, by week 23 I went to the pregnancy triage as there were reduced movements and I was feeling generally unwell. I was diagnosed with pregnancy induced high blood pressure and from 23 weeks attended the hospital daily for blood pressure monitoring, had weekly growth scans, and was being monitored closely for pre-eclampsia. I was taking blood thinning injections daily, and had two lots of blood pressure medication, 3 times a day.&nbsp;&nbsp;The hospital became like my second home and the stress took its toll on my pregnancy. It was no longer enjoyable, and I was terrified we were going to lose our baby after fighting so hard to get to where we were.&nbsp;At 37 weeks, I was induced after my blood pressure became unmanageable. The labour was its own battle, and I had to wait three days for a bed in the delivery suite, despite having contractions from the first hormone gel. My contractions were stopped with medication, and I was finally sent for the induction on the delivery suite, already at 3cm! I wasn’t responding to the medication, and my baby’s heart rate was dropping with every contraction. After 19 hours in labour, and my baby's heart rate failing to recover, I was taken for an emergency C-section.&nbsp;&nbsp;The C-section came with its own problems, as I bled heavily, and they thought that maybe my bowel had ruptured.&nbsp;But on the 14/04/2024 our miracle was born – our beautiful baby boy!&nbsp;We were both elated and cried harder than we’ve ever cried before. The recovery from the C-section was tough, I developed an infection and my wound reopened, meaning I had to be readmitted to the hospital. Due to the complications, it made those early stages of motherhood difficult to enjoy, and my emotions were all over the place – I felt angry and guilty as I had wanted this so much and wasn’t enjoying it like I thought I would.&nbsp;&nbsp;But at the time of writing this, our little boy Euan, has just turned 12 weeks old and he is truly incredible. And despite the difficult start I am so pleased to say I love motherhood. He has made me feel complete in a way I don’t think anything else ever could.&nbsp;&nbsp;Our IVF journey was difficult and tested us in so many ways. It was so mentally and physically demanding, and a journey I wouldn’t wish upon anyone.&nbsp; But despite everything, all the treatment, tests, medication, difficult pregnancy, and even more difficult labour, I’d do it all again! The outcome is worth every single second. What kept us going throughout was the end goal, the thought that it only takes one time for it to work – the thought of not having our own child and never experiencing pregnancy was worse than the setbacks and negative tests.&nbsp;&nbsp;If you keep going there is always that little bit of hope – no matter how small!&nbsp;To anyone feeling demotivated or like that day will never come, please don’t give up. It took us 7 and a half years to get our little miracle, and he is so worth it. Stick with it, listen to the doctors, because they know what they are doing – even if it isn’t necessarily a step you want to take! The process is long, and it can’t be rushed, but that happy ending will come.&nbsp;&nbsp;Also, listen to one another – even though it may seem like it is just one of you going through the treatment and physical aspects, the journey is one you take together as a team.&nbsp;&nbsp;Once we were placed on the waiting list, we received an appointment with the doctor and a treatment plan quite quickly, and things moved quicky after that. But if you need time, take it! Don’t underestimate how much of a challenge, and a change, it will be – make sure you are fully prepared and in the best space mentally and physically. Before starting the process, we had no idea how long it would take and were oblivious to how physically demanding it would be.&nbsp;&nbsp;The only regret I have is that we didn’t try sooner! I was naïve to think we wouldn’t face any issues and would be pregnant within a couple of months like most people believe.&nbsp;&nbsp;Through sharing our story on social media so many people have reached out to us, to either wish us well, or let us know that they have had similar issues and experiences. It’s crazy how common fertility issues are and how many couples go through IVF. I found comfort in reaching out and talking to others about their story – it was good to know we weren’t alone and that there was still hope for us.&nbsp;&nbsp;We are so lucky that we still have 6 strong, frozen embryos and hope to have another transfer in the future to extend our family. Lauren and Dale married in September 2016 and started trying for a baby in 2018. They faced infertility challenges due to Dale's low sperm motility and began IVF in 2021. Understanding the emotional impact&nbsp; Going through IVF treatment can bring up wide range of feelings and emotions, all of which are completely normal&nbsp;Hope and Excitement: The possibility of achieving pregnancy.&nbsp;Anxiety and Stress: The uncertainty of the outcome.&nbsp;Doubt: Wondering if what you’re doing is the right and questioning your choices.&nbsp;Disappointment and Sadness: When cycles do not result in pregnancy.&nbsp;Exhaustion and Overwhelm: With lots of medication, injections, hormones, and visits to the clinic.&nbsp;Feeling any, and all, of these things is totally normal, and everyone goes through them. However, what we don’t want are these feelings and emotions to cause pain and suffering. Finding ways to cope and allowing these moments to be felt and to pass will help you to manage during the IVF process.&nbsp;&nbsp;Strategies for Emotional Well-being&nbsp;Build a Support Network&nbsp;Family and friends: Share your feelings with trusted loved ones. All too often we see clients who shut down and stop sharing. It’s not until they start talking again do they see how much it can help lighten the load.&nbsp;&nbsp;Support groups: Sometimes a loved one might not be the best person, and we might really need to speak with people who really get what we are going through. There are lots of IVF or fertility support groups to connect with others who will understand your experience and offer a different type of support.&nbsp;Look after yourself: The process of IVF can really take its toll. In between all the appointments, the scans, taking medication and injections, and trying to keep your lives going it can be easy to forget to prioritise yourself. We know from years of experience that one of the best things you can do throughout the process is look after yourself.&nbsp;Set boundaries: It’s okay if there are things, events, or even people, you struggle with now you are going through IVF. It’s okay to have boundaries with friends and family and to start saying no to things. Putting you and your partner first is one of the best things you can do.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sleep: Sleep is not only important physically, but also incredibly important for mental wellbeing. With its ups and downs, IVF can often leave people exhausted and burnt out. Going to bed at a good time, sleeping at least 7-8 hours, and keeping a regular sleeping pattern is just one simple thing you can do to support yourself.&nbsp;&nbsp;Try to eat well: When we are going through a hard time, we all reach for our favourite foods for comfort, but it's important to keep a balanced diet. So, eating well most of the time is going to support you better, giving you more energy to deal with the day to day of IVF.&nbsp;&nbsp;Mindful moments: We know from our clients that things like meditation, journalling, breathwork, and even yoga, have helped them to manage the very intense emotional side of IVF. When things feel out of your control, finding something that allows you to tune out the noise and tune in with yourself could help guide you through.&nbsp;&nbsp;Seek Professional Help&nbsp;Counselling: Consider talking to a therapist specialising in fertility issues.&nbsp;Care Fertility Support Services: Take advantage of our counselling services and support groups.&nbsp;Communication with Your Partner&nbsp; Remember, there are two of you on this journey, and you’re not alone – you're in this together. It’s so important to have open and honest communication and talking with one another will help you to understand how each other are feeling – it's probably more similar than you think!&nbsp;Share Your Feelings: Talk about your emotions and listen to each other’s concerns – just talking can make everything feel so much better and really put things into perspective.&nbsp;Stay Connected: Spending quality time together outside treatment is something that is often neglected by many couples going through IVF. Remember to spend time together, plan a date night, or even just a regular check-in with each other can do you both the world of good.&nbsp;&nbsp;Managing Expectations&nbsp;Set Realistic Goals: It’s important to understand the IVF process and the success rates – this will help you to be better prepared for your treatment and help you to manage your expectations. IVF can take several cycles – it's not your fault and is completely normal.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Be Informed: Knowing the ins-and-outs of the IVF process can be so empowering, and many of our clients' become experts in their own right on all thing's fertility! It’s no secret that the emotional aspects of IVF can be challenging, but it's essential to acknowledge these feelings and find ways to cope throughout your treatment. At Care Fertility, we’re here to support you through your IVF journey. We want you to feel seen, feel heard, and feel supported. We’ve put together a quick guide on how you can manage the emotional ups and downs of IVF – including things that we know have helped our clients through their IVF journey:  

I was diagnosed with Turner’s syndrome, a condition that causes issues with ovarian development among other things, at 13. As soon as my parents explained the condition, I asked if it meant I couldn’t have children. Even at that young age, I knew I wanted children someday.&nbsp;The reality of my diagnosis &nbsp; When it was confirmed that I would never have my own child, I felt empty. My parents felt guilty, but I reassured them it wasn’t their fault. For a long time, every pregnant woman I saw was a painful reminder of what I thought I could never have.&nbsp;Expert care and support &nbsp; My parents researched the condition, and we went to see Professor Brook in London. I have been under the UCLH in London ever since and they continue to give me expert care to manage and monitor my condition.&nbsp;Meeting Alan and facing fertility challenges&nbsp; I had other boyfriends, but when I met Alan at 19, I knew he was the one. Early in our relationship, I told him about my fertility issues, fearing he might not want to be with me. However, Alan was incredibly supportive and attended my annual check-ups in London.&nbsp;Starting our IVF journey&nbsp; We got married in 2005 and always intended to commence <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/treatments-services/fertility-treatments/ivf/">In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)</a> treatment. So, after doing a house up and travelling we had our first and only NHS treatment in 2009, where we had IVF with a <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/donation/ivf-using-donor-eggs/">donor egg</a>. We were devastated when it didn’t work but stayed strong, we would try again and not give up.&nbsp;Seeking treatment abroad&nbsp; We found out about a clinic in Spain and after further investigation we embarked on a second course of treatment there. This again unfortunately was unsuccessful, however we had a <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/treatments-services/fertility-preservation/embryo-freezing-storage/">frozen embryo</a> remaining, so we had a second cycle in Spain. The clinic was fantastic for us, but I failed to become pregnant.&nbsp;Finding Care Fertility&nbsp; Despite moments when we wanted to give up, we both knew that a child was very important to us. We decided not to continue in Spain and through a colleague of Alan’s we heard about Care Fertility. We first visited Care Fertility Nottingham and were excited at the level of research and new techniques. Throughout the whole process the difficult thing to cope with is that things change and there are so many new techniques, it’s hard to feel you have tried everything.&nbsp;After in-depth discussions we embarked on another cycle with Care Fertility and were confident that we were in the right hands. At this point we discussed the blood test that looks at your <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/where-to-start/recurrent-miscarriage-old/">killer cells</a>, but we felt we were trying so many other new things that we decided not to have the blood test.&nbsp;Unfortunately, this cycle did not work either, so we decided to have the blood test before another cycle. I was personally devastated when it came back that I have high levels of killer cells. It made both of us feel that all previous attempts had been pointless.&nbsp;A glimmer of hope&nbsp; So, we then embarked on the fifth cycle, this time I underwent intralipid treatment. We were excited when for the first time we had a positive pregnancy test, however I started bleeding and miscarried at 5 weeks. We were devastated and I particularly found it hard to comprehend having another go and putting my body through it again.&nbsp;The final attempt&nbsp; However, after some respite we decided to have one last final attempt, this time at Care Fertility Manchester. We threw everything at it this time! We even decided to have the embryos <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/treatments-services/reproductive-genetic-testing/">chromosome tested</a>, as well as having an exclusive donor.&nbsp;We were delighted but apprehensive when we had another positive pregnancy test. We did not relax at all until our three-month scan.&nbsp;&nbsp;Thankfully the pregnancy was uncomplicated, and I gave birth to Francesca via C-Section!&nbsp;I look at her every day and can’t believe how lucky we are. It has taken a lot of heartache, but we now have a beautiful, amazing daughter. Diagnosed with Turner’s Syndrome at a young age, Ruth knew that having a child would be difficult, but she never gave up on her dream. Together with her supportive husband Alan, they navigated IVF, heartbreak, and ultimately found joy in the birth of their daughter Francesca. Here’s their inspiring story: 

What is vaginismus?&nbsp; Vaginismus occurs when the muscles around the vagina involuntarily contract, making penetration painful or even impossible. This can affect sexual intercourse, gynaecological exams, and even tampon use.&nbsp;Symptoms of vaginismus&nbsp; The primary symptom of vaginismus is difficulty with vaginal penetration. Additional symptoms may include:&nbsp;<ul><li>Burning or stinging pain during attempted penetration&nbsp;</li></ul><ul><li>Tightening or clenching of the pelvic muscles&nbsp;</li></ul><ul><li>Anxiety and fear related to vaginal penetration&nbsp;</li></ul>What causes vaginismus?&nbsp; The causes of vaginismus can vary and often include a combination of physical and emotional factors:&nbsp;<ul><li>Physical factors: Infections, hormonal changes, childbirth, or menopause.&nbsp;</li></ul><ul><li>Emotional factors: Fear of pain, past trauma, anxiety, or relationship issues.&nbsp;</li></ul>Treatment options for vaginismus&nbsp; Vaginismus is a treatable condition, and your GP may refer you to a gynaecologist or psychologist to help you overcome vaginismus. Here are some common treatments:&nbsp;<ul><li>Pelvic floor therapy: Working with a specialist to learn exercises that help control and relax the pelvic floor muscles.&nbsp;</li></ul><ul><li>Counselling: Therapy can address any underlying psychological factors, such as fear or anxiety.&nbsp;</li></ul><ul><li>Gradual desensitisation: Using vaginal dilators of increasing size to gradually get accustomed to penetration.&nbsp;</li></ul><ul><li>Medication: In some cases, topical anaesthetics or muscle relaxants may be prescribed.&nbsp;</li></ul>Fertility and vaginismusHow vaginismus affects fertility&nbsp; Vaginismus can pose challenges for couples trying to conceive. The pain and difficulty associated with vaginal penetration can make natural conception difficult. However, it is important to note that vaginismus does not affect the ability to produce healthy eggs. Forever unlucky in love, “going solo” was something I considered from a young age. I originally talked about doing it when I turned 27 but when that came, I knew I wasn’t ready to give up on what I believed was the dream of a husband and a big traditional family. Approaching 30, feeling left behind I still clung on to that hope.&nbsp;I realised I was waiting for the man - when I wanted the baby more. Why couldn’t I do this on my own?&nbsp;There are so many questions that come up when you start to seriously think about having a baby alone. Emotionally we are all different, everyone will have different motives and doubts. People will be on your side, and some will disapprove. But over the last two years I’ve been on quite a journey.&nbsp;How do you find a clinic?&nbsp; There are so many different clinics out there. I initially assumed I’d only be able to have treatment at a London fertility clinic and as I live in Kent. However, after a good Google search, I found there were Care Fertility clinics across the UK – and one was just a mile down the road from me in Tunbridge Wells.&nbsp;I reached out to the clinic in February 2017, but I knew I didn’t want to go for an appointment yet as I wasn’t planning on starting any treatment until the autumn, and I knew that if I went before then and started talking about it that I'd want to start right away!&nbsp;Finally, I had my first consultation in June 2017, which was just a chat to see what my options were. At this stage you may decide you aren’t too sure of the clinic and look elsewhere, you’ll know what feels right and <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/fertility-clinics/tunbridge-wells/">Care Fertility Tunbridge Wells</a> felt like the right place the moment I stepped through the door.&nbsp;&nbsp;What happens at an initial consultation?&nbsp; I talked about what I wanted, and the timeline involved from my side (this was due to when I was eligible for enhanced maternity at my job!). The Consultant talked me through the process of treatment using donor sperm. He recommended I started off with <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/treatments-services/fertility-treatments/iui/">Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)</a> as I didn’t have any obvious fertility issues. My <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/treatments-services/fertility-assessments-tests/female-fertility-assessments/">AMH</a> was tested, and I was told if it was low they’d recommend having the treatment straight away rather than waiting until the October as planned. It wasn’t. In fact, it was very high - a huge relief.&nbsp;How do you choose a donor?&nbsp; This is the part of the process most people are interested in! I didn’t know how it worked so I was so grateful that Care Fertility’s medical and embryology teams were on hand to advise. When I first thought about having a baby on my own, I talked to a gay friend of mine about the possibility of him being a <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/donation/ivf-using-donor-sperm/">sperm donor.</a> When I knew I really wanted to do it, I said let’s go for it as long as he wanted to be my child's dad! However, if he just wanted to help me out, then I’d rather use an unknown donor.&nbsp;&nbsp;Care Fertility recommended this too, and they suggested using the European Sperm Bank (ESB). The thing that sold it for me with the ESB, is that you get a photo of your donor as a child. There is so much information and it’s all quite overwhelming to start with. I realised as I ploughed my way through profile after profile that quite a few things were less important than I initially expected them to be.&nbsp;&nbsp;I found that personality felt less important as I debated nature vs. nurture. It was important for my donor to have similar physical characteristics to me. A fellow solo mum said, “don’t read the profiles looking for a man you’d like, choose someone who would fit into your family.”&nbsp;&nbsp;I chose a donor with brown hair, blue eyes, and pale, freckly skin just like me. I wanted someone who showed creativity and intelligence as I have both those qualities too. What I loved about the ESB was the amount of information you got: general stats, full medical history of him and his entire extended family, a fun questionnaire filled in by him, staff impressions, and personality test as well as the childhood photo. I would have his profile printed off in a folder, ready for my child to look at- knowing that they would have a sense of where half their genes came from made me happy.&nbsp;Before choosing a donor, I met with the <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/support/wellbeing/counselling/">Care Fertility counsellor</a>, as is required by the HFEA. The anonymity laws changed in 2005 so my child could access the donor’s details when he/she turned 18. In the session, we talked about the implications of this, and whether this was something that I was OK with.&nbsp;So, donor chosen. What next?&nbsp; As I was young (34) and had a high AMH I could wait a few months to get started. I met with a Care Fertility nurse to talk me through the IUI process and teach me how inject myself. IUI involved a drug-controlled cycle ahead of the insemination.&nbsp;&nbsp;I was on two different drugs, one to stop my natural cycle and another to control a cycle that the clinic could track. Once my period had started, I called Care Fertility and had an ultrasound scan. I remember the nurse saying, “there’s your uterus” and thinking to myself “phew! I need one of those!” - I’d been having nightmares that I didn’t have any reproductive organs! I had the scan on 1st November and was responding so well to the drugs that I was in theatre having the IUI on the 10th.&nbsp;The dreaded two week wait&nbsp; After the IUI procedure is done I was given a pregnancy test and a test date. Mine was 19 days after the insemination. These weeks will be the longest weeks of your life. You will question everything; you will Google everything and learn that ANYTHING can be a sign of pregnancy. You will hope and pray more than you ever have in your life.&nbsp;Two days before I was due to test, my period came. I was gutted. I had really believed it could work; I had responded so well. It wasn’t fair.&nbsp;It hasn’t worked, what now?&nbsp; I wanted to get started straight away with another round, but my next period coincided with Christmas, so I had to have a month’s gap. I’m so glad because emotionally I needed the time to prepare myself to go through it again.&nbsp;February 2018 came, and it all began. There had been no tangible reason why my first round failed, so everything was going to be done in the same way. This time, however, I didn’t respond to the drugs in the same way. The doctors and I were happy to keep going but I did think it was going to be cancelled. I had regular scans for 23 days before the green light was shone. This time I had lots of medium sized follicles rather than a few great, big ones. We went ahead!&nbsp;...It didn’t work.&nbsp;IVF Time&nbsp; June 2018, my first <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/treatments-services/fertility-treatments/ivf/">In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)</a> cycle started. I knew the nurses at Care Fertility so well and felt in such good hands, I stopped worrying. More injections, higher dosages, and a lot crazier hormones! I had coped with work really well through my IUI treatments, but IVF did take its toll on me. I was signed off for a couple of weeks. It was the best decision - I could focus on me and my embryo!&nbsp;They retrieved seven eggs, five were mature and fertilised. The embryology team were amazing, despite several panicked phone calls from me, even doing an extra check on my embryos to reassure me.&nbsp;On 9th June 2018, exactly one year after my first appointment I had the best embryo transferred. The photograph of it was textbook perfect. One of my embryos was good enough to freeze. This was so reassuring, as if it didn’t work, I knew I’d have another one there. I had a <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/costs/">payment package</a> meaning I’d be ok financially to use this <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/treatments-services/fertility-preservation/embryo-freezing-storage/">frozen embryo</a> if needed.&nbsp;I didn’t need that frozen embryo. The transfer was successful and seven pregnancy tests – yes, seven - confirmed that I was indeed expecting.&nbsp;On 25th February 2019, after four vials of donor sperm, two IUI cycles, one IVF cycle, 78 injections, dozens of internal scans, a lot of perseverance, determination and desire, Scarlett was born!&nbsp;It had happened. I was a mummy, and she is beyond perfect. When I held her for the first time it was like I’d known her forever. Right now, it makes no difference to her that she only has a mummy, I have enough love for her, and she has everything she could need.&nbsp;&nbsp;There will come a time when questions are asked, and she will need to make sense of why she doesn’t have a daddy. But she will always know that her father wanted her to exist, and that a kind man gave me something I needed to make me complete.&nbsp;More success stories &nbsp; Many couples have successfully achieved their dream of starting a family at Care Fertility. What is the NHS referral process?&nbsp; The NHS referral process is how you get access to fertility assessments and treatments funded by the NHS. It starts with seeing your GP, who will assess your situation and refer you to a gynaecology clinic that specialises in reproductive medicine or directly to a fertility clinic like Care Fertility. Here further investigations may be undertaken and/or a treatment plan will be put in place. &nbsp;Who can access NHS fertility treatment?&nbsp; Eligibility for NHS-funded fertility treatment is determined by criteria set by your local ICB. Factors like age, BMI, how long you've been trying to conceive, and whether you have children already may affect eligibility.&nbsp;NHS Funding and the ‘Postcode Lottery’&nbsp; Unfortunately, NHS funding for fertility treatment can vary significantly from region to region, which can make it feel like a postcode lottery. Each ICB has its own budget and guidelines for fertility treatment funding, leading to differences in eligibility criteria and number of treatments funded per patient. Some people may not be eligible due to these regional variations, which can be frustrating and disheartening. Even if you aren’t eligible for funding for fertility treatment or your ICB don’t provide funding you are still entitled to have your investigations on the NHS if referred by your GP.&nbsp;Why some people aren't eligible&nbsp; Common reasons for ineligibility include:&nbsp;<ul><li>Age restrictions: Regions have strict age limits for NHS-funded fertility treatment, the average is 40 years old, but some are as low as 35 and others as high as 43.&nbsp;</li><li>Previous children: Either partner having children from a current or previous relationship can affect eligibility.&nbsp;</li><li>Duration of infertility: Criteria may require a minimum period of trying to conceive before NHS funding is considered. This tends to be around 2 years of having unprotected sex for a heterosexual couple. However, it is recommended a couple be referred for fertility investigations if they don’t conceive within 1 year of trying. Where either partner is diagnosed with a known fertility factor, they don’t usually need to also wait 2 years.&nbsp;</li><li>Lifestyle factors: Smoking, and other lifestyle choices may impact eligibility.&nbsp;</li><li>Body Mass Index (BMI): In most cases a BMI within the range of 19-30 is required to be eligible.&nbsp;</li><li>LGBTQ+ considerations: LGBTQ+ individuals and couples may face additional challenges in accessing NHS-funded fertility treatment, depending on local guidelines and interpretations of eligibility criteria. Sadly, surrogacy is rarely funded and where there is no diagnosed fertility factor for the partner providing the eggs 6 self-funded rounds of IUI are often required prior to eligibility. &nbsp;</li></ul>Navigating these criteria can be complex, but Care Fertility is committed to helping you understand your options and advocating for equitable access to fertility care.&nbsp;Steps in the NHS referral process&nbsp;<ol><li>Your GP appointment: Make an appointment with your GP to talk about your fertility concerns. They'll do some initial tests and assessments and dependent of these results may do an onward referral&nbsp;</li><li>Onward referral:&nbsp; Pathway 1 Onward referral to Care Fertility: If more tests or treatment are needed, in some regions your GP can refer you directly to Care Fertility. Here, our specialists will do thorough tests like blood tests, ultrasound scans, and semen analysis to find out what's causing any fertility problems. &nbsp; Pathway 2 Onward referral to a secondary care provider: These are usually based in hospitals and often called reproductive medicine or sub-fertility clinics. As with a referral direct to Care Fertility they may conduct further tests. Where they identify a form of fertility treatment is required, they will do an onward referral to a specialist fertility clinic, like Care Fertility! My personal journey into motherhood&nbsp; When I was younger, I imagined having the perfect family, a loving husband and two or three children. I imagined that all these dreams would come true at a young age, but life decided to deal me a different hand of cards. Trying to conceive with my first child wasn’t as straight forward as I hoped it would be and after 20 months of trying, I felt like my chances of becoming a mum were slim. &nbsp;My GP decided to refer me for fertility assessments, and it was discovered during an ultrasound that I had <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/where-to-start/causes-of-infertility/female-fertility-issues/">polycystic ovaries</a>. I was so upset to hear this news and felt like I had a long journey ahead of me. In a twist of fate though, at the time of the scan I was told that my endometrial lining appeared to be very thick and that I may in fact be pregnant. &nbsp;A few days later following a home test it was confirmed that I was expecting my first child. My partner and I were of course over the moon, but the diagnosis of the polycystic ovaries left me feeling concerned for the future. It was this experience that made me realise how devastated I would have felt had I been told that I could not conceive naturally. It was through all of this that I started to think about other couples who were struggling to start their own families and what a heart-rending experience it must be.&nbsp;Considering surrogacy&nbsp; When my son, Max, was 1, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I really wanted to be pregnant again. I thoroughly enjoyed carrying Max, pregnancy seemed to suit me, and my body handled it amazingly. However, following the breakdown of my relationship&nbsp;with Max’s dad and the fact that I had polycystic ovaries, I knew that having any more children of my own would probably not be in my future. &nbsp;I couldn’t stop thinking about all the couples who wanted a family but couldn’t conceive, and how devastating it must be for a woman to hear that she may not be able to carry her own children. &nbsp;That’s when it hit me like a freight train – I wanted to be a surrogate!I started to research surrogacy and found lots of information on how to go about it, the legal implications, and how to find potential intended parents (IPs). After a year of careful consideration, and weighing everything up, I made the final decision that I wanted to go ahead and carry a baby for someone else.&nbsp;My first journey&nbsp; After deciding to become a surrogate, I now had to find a couple that were in need. At the time, some friends of the family were considering their options following treatment for cancer that had left the lady unable to have her own children. &nbsp;They were looking into adoption, and I decided to ask them if they had considered surrogacy. They were of course overwhelmed and went away to do their own research and have a serious think about things. It didn’t take them long to come back to me, and we got in contact with Care Fertility to discuss treatment. &nbsp;I knew from early on that I would prefer to be a host surrogate as using my eggs and carrying a baby that was genetically related to me would be something that I would find difficult. &nbsp;Using donor eggs and the intended father’s sperm, things happened quite quickly and following the embryo transfer in April 2015, the IPs were delighted to be expecting their baby due in January 2016! &nbsp;Being a surrogate for the first time was the most rewarding experience of my life. The pregnancy and birth went by in the blink of an eye, and without complication! Nothing can describe the feeling I felt when I watched their baby girl being placed into their arms, and&nbsp;the sheer joy it brought them - I knew that surrogacy was something I wanted to experience again.&nbsp;My second journey&nbsp; It was only a matter of months following the birth of my first surrogate baby that I knew I wanted to do it again and help another couple. At this stage I joined <a href="https://surrogacyuk.org/">Surrogacy UK</a> and was amazed by the support network that was available to surrogates and IP’s. After meeting so many couples hoping to achieve a family through surrogacy, I found a <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/where-to-start/fertility-for-lgbtq/">same sex couple</a> that I instantly hit it off with. It was as though we had been friends forever. Again, things happened relatively quickly, and we got a positive pregnancy test result in February 2017. &nbsp;Being a surrogate has made me feel like I am doing one of most special things a person can possibly do for someone else. Helping a couple who otherwise would never be able to have children is so rewarding and the joy and happiness it provides for years to come makes every second worthwhile.&nbsp;

The sperm donation process is overseen by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), which sets strict guidelines to ensure safety and ethical practice.&nbsp;Who can donate sperm? &nbsp; Men aged 18-45 can apply to become sperm donors. Donors must be in good health, with no known serious medical conditions or genetic disorders. Before donation, potential donors undergo rigorous health screening, including tests for sexually transmitted infections and genetic conditions, to ensure the safety of the recipients and future children.&nbsp;Who cannot donate?&nbsp; Certain criteria may disqualify someone from donating sperm. What is the two-week wait?&nbsp; The two-week wait is the time between your embryo transfer or insemination and the day you can take a pregnancy test. While they are typically non-cancerous and often don’t cause any symptoms, in some cases, they can cause considerable discomfort and affect a person's quality of life.&nbsp;&nbsp;Studies show that fibroids affect approximately 35-77% of reproductive-age women, and nearing age 50, this likelihood may increase to 70-80% depending on the patient's ethnicity. They are the most common tumour in women and are highly prevalent in patients with infertility. Fibroids are present in 5-10% of infertile patients and may be the sole cause of infertility in 1-2.4% of cases.1&nbsp;Types of fibroids&nbsp;There are different types of fibroids, classified based on their location in the uterus:&nbsp;Intramural Fibroids: These develop in the womb muscle and may distort the shape of the uterus if they grow big enough, sometimes causing heavy periods, pressure, and pain.&nbsp;Subserosal Fibroids: This type of fibroid begins in the muscle wall but later protrudes into the pelvis.&nbsp;Submucosal Fibroids: These fibroids grow into the uterine cavity and often cause fertility problems.&nbsp;Causes and risk factors&nbsp; The exact cause of fibroids is not well understood, but several factors may contribute to their development:&nbsp;Hormonal changes: Oestrogen and progesterone, hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle, can promote the growth of fibroids.&nbsp;Genetics: A family history of fibroids increases the likelihood of developing them.&nbsp;Age: Fibroids are most common in people aged 30-40.&nbsp;Lifestyle factors: Diet, obesity, and high blood pressure are associated with an increased risk of fibroids.&nbsp;Symptoms of fibroids&nbsp; Symptoms vary depending on the size, number, and location of the fibroids. Imagine you are your own best friend, organise a massage, a yoga class, some acupuncture – even just a regular 30 minutes of reading or listening to music – whatever helps you feel calm and helps you to sleep well.&nbsp;Control When you walk into a fertility clinic, you hand over power to someone else – treatment, dates, outcomes – it is all suddenly out of your control. As human beings we hate uncertainty, and being in limbo is hard. Maybe you're not going on holiday this year, or maybe you are staying in a job you don’t like – all because you are going through treatment. Taking back control where you can, will help you to feel more normal – consider what really needs to be on hold and try to carry on as normal wherever you can.&nbsp;Be kind It is very normal for anyone trying to get pregnant to be disappointed or angry when it doesn’t happen straightaway - and sometimes this anger can be directed at yourself. Anger at your body for not ‘working’, or anger because you did not start trying earlier. All these feelings are natural, but if you can build an awareness of your reactions and try to bring compassion instead. It’ll help to lighten the already heavy load.&nbsp;&nbsp;Seek support Everyone needs a different level and a different type of support – but knowing, and asking for, what you need can make a huge difference. Your first reaction may be to tell everyone or no one – but consider the whole journey you are going to go through, and when and how you will want to talk things through and ask for support. Be clear about what you need – it is another place you can take control in amongst all the uncertainty.&nbsp;Balancing the present and the future You may be someone who lives in the moment or likes to plan to ahead – and if you have a partner, they may think differently. Decide if it is helpful to know what your Plan B is at each stage, or whether you would rather put one foot in front of the other. Be honest with yourself and each other about what you need.&nbsp;&nbsp;Your relationship matters There are usually (although not always) two of you on this journey, and the stresses and challenges can put huge pressure on your relationship. Perhaps your relationship is usually very balanced and equal, but going through treatment has made one of you feel powerless, and the other one unable to express your emotions as you care for your partner. Too quickly, partners can stop sharing how they really feel, and both can feel alone. This means that the surrogate cannot receive payment for carrying a child, other than reasonable expenses incurred as a result of the surrogacy (e.g., medical costs, travel, and maternity clothing).&nbsp;Commercial surrogacy: Commercial surrogacy, where the surrogate is paid a fee beyond reasonable expenses, is illegal in the UK. This is to prevent the exploitation of surrogates and ensure that surrogacy is not treated as a commercial transaction.&nbsp;Surrogacy agreements&nbsp; Surrogacy agreements are not legally binding in the UK. While intended parents and surrogates can agree to terms and conditions, these agreements cannot be enforced by law. The surrogate retains the right to keep the baby until a legal transfer of parenthood is completed, however, practically this is exceedingly rare. &nbsp;Parental Orders&nbsp; After the child is born, the intended parents must apply for a Parental Order to become the legal parents of the child. This legal process involves the following steps:&nbsp;Application: The intended parents must apply for a Parental Order within six months of the child's birth.&nbsp;Conditions: The surrogate must consent to the Parental Order freely and unconditionally when the child is at least six weeks old. For many individuals and couples, surrogacy has become a viable and popular way to become parents. This blog provides a comprehensive overview of what surrogacy is and the legal landscape in the UK, as well as how Care Fertility supports you through this journey. 

My wife Aimee, and I, Anna, always knew we’d have to do the whole ‘make a baby’ thing differently, but we were up for the challenge. We thought it’d be pretty easy – I mean, we had two wombs between us, but it proved to be one of the hardest, most challenging things we have ever done.&nbsp;Financial hurdles&nbsp;and LGBTQ+ inequality&nbsp; Fertility treatment is not funded by the NHS in our area, so we had to find quite a bit of money to fund it ourselves. We re-mortgaged our house to ensure we had enough in the pot to cover everything - it wasn’t ideal, but when you want something so badly you do everything you can to make it happen, right?&nbsp;Choosing a sperm donor&nbsp; We chose a donor from the London sperm bank which was quite a surreal process (almost like online shopping, but sperm instead of shoes!) then got a treatment plan together with our chosen clinic who were amazing throughout.&nbsp;Our first try:&nbsp;IUI and IVF&nbsp; We decided that I would try and get pregnant first, and I had my first IUI treatment in 2017, which unfortunately unfolded into two failed cycles. So, I decided I needed to take a different approach. I took some time to reflect as we couldn’t afford to just keep attempting and had to ask ourselves whether we were missing something and if there were something more that we could do to improve our chances.&nbsp;Everyone tells you once you start trying to fall pregnant it is easy; we all spend the first stages of our lives trying NOT to fall pregnant, but then when it doesn’t work for you, you always question why that is.&nbsp;Mental health and fertility: finding balance&nbsp; For me, particularly, before we embarked on our next course of treatment, I wanted to make sure I was in the best possible position. IVF is a big process and isn’t to be taken lightly, and there is still that chance that it might not work. We knew we would be set on the best path for us medically for our circumstances, but I just didn’t feel 100% ready to take it on.&nbsp;I started looking into ways we could best prepare and began finding resources on how&nbsp;mental health can have an influence on your ability&nbsp;to get pregnant. That really hit home for me. My mind felt like it was at breaking point, I was so incredibly stressed at work, I was so devastated about my failed treatments, and felt truly at rock bottom.&nbsp;So, I just decided to take a bit more control of things in my life.&nbsp;I started to introduce meditation, focussed on positive mindset, I really got clear on how I felt and learned to process those emotions. I was really determined to get myself into a place where I felt ready to take on IVF.&nbsp;It didn’t take too long before I started to feel the benefits of the changes I had made. &nbsp;IVF Success: A renewed perspective&nbsp; I was feeling so much better and going into my IVF treatment my initial test results had improved. My AMH had increased which was amazing. I responded well to the drugs prescribed to me and had seven eggs fertilised along with a fresh embryo transfer. All signs were much more positive this time round, and I was successful in falling pregnant!&nbsp;I felt like a completely different person compared to when I had the first rounds of IUI. I went into the treatment and actually really enjoyed it. Even though it isn’t easy by any means and is invasive, I just had a completely different perspective this time round.&nbsp;We welcomed our first son Olly into the world, and we couldn’t have been happier.&nbsp;Growing our family&nbsp; We decided that we wanted to grow our family, and Aimee would be the one to have treatment. Having been through the treatment before, we wanted to use what we had learnt and apply it to this round of treatment too.&nbsp;Again, as well as personal meds being given and clinically being on the right path. We wanted to feel ready to take this on together. I had a relatively easy pregnancy and birth, but Aimee has had a bit of a tougher experience. A cyst needed aspiration and a few more visits to the experts before being ready. We still got a great number of eggs – a total of eight!&nbsp;Unfortunately, we suffered a chemical pregnancy and miscarriage. Which caused a whole wave of new emotions to deal with, but&nbsp;we took time to process this together. Aimee was fantastic and found a positive in that she was able to get pregnant - which isn’t always the case for everyone.&nbsp;The eggs we had left over from the collection had been frozen, so we were moving into new territory of a frozen transfer. This brought new questions and with it, a daunting feeling. But Aimee’s body having some down time and us keeping a positive mindset, the frozen transfer was successful!&nbsp;As I am writing this Aimee is currently 26 weeks pregnant with our second child!&nbsp;Sharing our story: supporting others&nbsp; Now we have been through it, we want to help others and to bring reassurance.&nbsp;Whilst you are going through the journey, it can feel rubbish at times. You can start to question whether it will ever happen for you, do you still want this, can you afford to try multiple rounds – and this is completely normal! &nbsp;Now we have our family we can say wholeheartedly that it is completely worth it.&nbsp;Without Care Fertility, my wife and I would not have our son and she would not be pregnant with our second child, we cannot express how grateful we are.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Shared motherhood, also known as reciprocal IVF, is an empowering option for same-sex female couples who wish to both be intimately involved in the conception and birth of their child. This blog will guide you through the shared motherhood process and how we support you every step of the way. 

Choosing Care Fertility: our starting point&nbsp; We were unsure where to start the process but figured our local GP may be able to help. Unfortunately, this wasn’t particularly fruitful - we found out no treatment support was applicable to <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/where-to-start/ivf-for-lesbian-couples/">same sex couples</a> - especially when requiring a donor in our area. A bit stumped we sought the advice of friends who had been in a similar situation and had fertility treatment at a clinic. After researching local clinics, we came across <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/our-clinics/ivf-clinic-tunbridge-wells/">Care Fertility Tunbridge Wells</a>.&nbsp; The complexities of IVF: A detailed insight&nbsp; We started with an initial consultation and the doctor answered all of our questions. We were told due to our age, infertility shouldn’t be an issue and so we ran through the costs of IVF which included the treatment, scans, and medication as well as <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/donation/ivf-using-donor-sperm/">donor sperm</a> and any tests we may need to have.&nbsp; "We decided to have our initial blood tests done there and then - why wait let’s get the process started!" After our consultation we went home for a chat and to look at our finances and whether the timings for starting would work for us. We also discussed <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/donation/donating-your-eggs/">egg donation</a>, it seemed only fair to look into this as we were relying on the kindness of a male donor to help us.&nbsp;&nbsp; First attempts: Jenna's journey with IVF&nbsp; My wife and I decided to try my eggs first. FSH test results came back quite low meaning I wasn’t growing as many eggs as we would have liked. We felt that with our age this would only get lower. We had agreed that each of us would have two rounds of treatment (should one not be successful) and set ourselves a financial limit. &nbsp;Due to a previous tumour in my wife's spine, we knew I would carry the baby. With trying my eggs first - our donor search focussed on finding someone with characteristics similar to my wife. We quickly made our choice and felt 100% happy. The donor sperm was sent to our clinic and I began the process of baseline scans, injection, and pessaries. The nursing team at Care Fertility were amazing and we felt instantly at ease.&nbsp;We made it to egg collection day – with just a handful of eggs. We prayed for them to fertilise. The next day Care Fertility rang to say not all had fertilised but reassured us they would be closely monitored hoping to get to a blastocyst at day five. Unfortunately, they didn’t make it to five days. By day three we were back at the clinic for the embryo transfer and to start our two week wait. Sadly, none were viable for freezing. &nbsp;A couple of days before we were meant to test, I started to bleed. We were not feeling positive and so decided to test. It was negative. Having been so swept away with the excitement, we were gutted at this result. We knew it was a possibility it wouldn’t work, but we agreed that we would try again.&nbsp;Care Fertility adjusted my medication to try and increase the number of eggs and their quality. During the scans we were told it wasn’t looking great for collection and we could cancel this round of treatment because the egg collection may not be very successful. We decided to go with our gut and continue. We’d got this far and already spent the money, so thought ‘why not’. This time the doctors tried ‘<a href="https://www.carefertility.com/treatments-services/embryology-treatments/embryoglue/">Embryo Glue’</a> in the hope this would make a difference.&nbsp;On egg collection day we had even less eggs than the first time. Only a couple of eggs made it to day three, and once again it was embryo transfer time and the start of the two week wait.&nbsp;Sadly, it was the same again and I was bleeding before my period was due. Negative. I thought I was ok and dealing with the disappointment (a few tears in the morning) but went to work. However, I realised once there - how upset I was and swiftly went home for a cry and cuddles with my wife!&nbsp; Second time around: Lydia's turn with IVF It took us a couple of months to recover before we decided to try again but this time with my wife’s eggs and I would carry.&nbsp;My wife has <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/where-to-start/causes-of-infertility/female-fertility-issues/">Polycystic Ovaries</a> (PCOS) meaning she could over stimulate and produce a lot of eggs. Whilst this was a worry, it was also wonderful to hear potentially how many eggs we would have after the disappointing results of our previous treatments. &nbsp;My wife did her share of injections and medication whilst I was getting into sync with her cycle, and egg collection day quickly came around! We had so many eggs we were over the moon, and even more amazing was that nearly all of them made it to blastocysts and day five – and with eggs to freeze! We felt so positive and excited, it was wonderful. We were ever optimistic that we’d made it this far so successfully. On day five - our embryo transfer was booked in. We just felt so different and positive, and ready for the two week wait!&nbsp; The miracle of pregnancy: testing positive&nbsp; Three days later I had a funny feeling, and I just knew I was pregnant. I can’t describe it, but I knew. So, we tested early and it was positive! In complete disbelief, I would test every day until the clinic test just to make sure! We were so excited to tell them it had finally worked! We were so excited we just wanted to tell everyone that it had worked, but we waited.&nbsp;By the time we got to 7 weeks, nausea had kicked in. It was constant but I hadn’t yet been sick - we were so hopeful this was a good sign. The nurse turned the screen on our seven-week scan to check herself before showing us. I was so nervous. Then all of a sudden, we heard “all looks great” before hearing a very fast heart beat and seeing a tiny blob on the screen! My wife and I burst into tears – we were over the moon!&nbsp;&nbsp;Our pregnancy went well and to our surprise was a little girl born in December 2016, two weeks and two days overdue. She was a dream baby and we settled so quickly into family life.&nbsp;&nbsp; Expanding our family: frozen embryo success&nbsp; In 2017 we decided to try again with our <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/treatments-services/fertility-preservation/embryo-freezing-storage/">frozen embryos</a>. Thankfully this time there were no injections or lots of medication but simply controlling our cycle and ensuring my lining was ready. &nbsp;Our first embryo didn’t thaw as the embryology team would have liked, but we decided to try again. However, that didn’t thaw properly either. We were assured how unusual this was, and told we could try again with our third and final embryo – third time lucky! Our little embryo thawed and was transferred, and for the fourth time we began our two week wait.&nbsp;Unlike my previous pregnancy I wasn’t feeling as hopeful and definitely didn’t have the feeling of being pregnant. So, we tested on the same day as we did in our last pregnancy (albeit earlier than advised!). It was negative. My wife reassured me I was just testing too early and to be patient. We waited another couple of days, and then there was our pink line we had been waiting for! We were thrilled, and relieved, to let the clinic know and book us in for our 7-week scan.&nbsp;We decided we’d find out what we were having this time at a private scan - another girl! We were so happy. The sickness then swiftly returned.&nbsp;&nbsp; Joy and relief: our second daughter's arrival Our pregnancy went well up until the final couple of weeks where the baby decided to lay transverse and I had a lot of fluid! Finally, after a two week hospital stay, our second daughter was born via C-section in June 2018! &nbsp;Both girls are thriving and ganging up on their mummies! Thankfully we both work from home and we get to spend a lot of time together as a family. &nbsp; Looking ahead: sharing our journey through writing Our eldest is starting to ask some questions about her “two mummy” family. I have since written a book which will help her understand how we used donor treatment to get pregnant which we will be launching soon! &nbsp;

Our Dream of Parenthood&nbsp; My partner Jacob and I, Luke, have been together for eight wonderful years. From the moment we met, we both knew we wanted children. Although we never discussed the specifics of how or when, we always envisioned ourselves as parents someday.&nbsp; An unexpected offer from family&nbsp; A few years ago, Jacob’s sister, Jessica*, offered to be our surrogate if we ever wanted to start a family. Initially, I thanked her but dismissed the idea, thinking surrogacy was something only rich celebrities pursued. However, when she brought it up again, I realised she was serious about helping us.&nbsp;Diving into research&nbsp; That night, I delved into extensive research on <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/where-to-start/gay-surrogacy-ivf-for-male-couples/">surrogacy and IVF processes</a>. We needed to fully understand the journey before committing. After months of learning, we decided to take the plunge. Our research led us to Care Fertility, and in June 2019, we had an informative phone call with Care Fertility Nottingham. The conversation filled us with excitement and made our dream of becoming dads seem achievable.&nbsp;The consultation and decision&nbsp; Our initial consultation at Care Fertility was a whirlwind of emotions—nervousness and excitement intertwined. We decided on <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/donation/surrogacy-old/">host surrogacy</a>, where an <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/donation/ivf-using-donor-eggs/">egg donor</a> would be used, and Jessica would carry our child. The process was thorough, ensuring all parties were aligned and supported.&nbsp;Choosing the egg donor&nbsp; At the time, Care Fertility launched their <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/donation/ivf-using-donor-eggs-old/">frozen egg bank,</a> which was perfect timing for us. We browsed the online portal and quickly found our ideal donor. Opting for a large set of frozen eggs, we hoped to maximise our chances of success. We extend heartfelt thanks to every egg donor—your generosity really does change lives.&nbsp;The nerve-wracking wait&nbsp; The day of egg thawing and fertilisation was incredibly nerve-wracking. Out of nine frozen eggs, seven thawed, and six fertilised—an amazing result! Five days later, we anxiously awaited news from the clinic. We were thrilled to learn that three embryos had reached the blastocyst stage.&nbsp;The embryo transfer&nbsp; One embryo was transferred to our surrogate, while the other two were <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/treatments-services/fertility-preservation/egg-freezing-storage/">frozen</a>. We included <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/treatments-services/embryology-treatments/caremapsai/">Caremaps-AI</a> in our treatment, receiving a time-lapse video of our developing embryo. We watched it daily during the two-week wait, hoping and praying for success.&nbsp;The Joy of pregnancy&nbsp; Test day brought an unparalleled level of anxiety, but seeing those two lines on the pregnancy test was a moment of complete shock and joy - our prayers were answered, our surrogate was pregnant! The seven-week scan at the clinic went smoothly, and we bid farewell to Care Fertility Nottingham, continuing with our pregnancy journey.&nbsp;The arrival of Nova Feltham&nbsp; On 12th November 2021, our beautiful daughter, Nova Feltham, entered the world. Words cannot express how complete and overjoyed we feel. Our lives transformed that day, filled with a love we've never known. However, this definition may vary slightly depending on factors such as age and medical history. Infertility isn't solely a female issue—both men and women can contribute to fertility challenges. Sometimes there is more than one contributing factor and sometimes, despite extensive investigations, no cause is found.&nbsp;&nbsp; Understanding the causes Female factorsOvulation disorders: Irregular or absent ovulation can make it difficult for women to conceive. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can disrupt ovulation patterns. Age: As women age, the number of eggs and their quality decreases. Uterine or fallopian tube issues: Structural problems within the reproductive organs, such as blocked fallopian tubes or uterine abnormalities, can make conception harder. Endometriosis: This condition occurs when the tissue lining the uterus grows outside of it, potentially causing inflammation and scarring that affects fertility. Male factorsLow sperm count or poor sperm quality: Issues such as low sperm count, abnormal sperm morphology, or reduced sperm motility can impact male fertility.Varicocele: A varicose vein in the testicles can lead to overheating, which may affect sperm production.Ejaculation disorders: Problems with ejaculation, such as premature ejaculation or retrograde ejaculation (where semen enters the bladder instead of exiting through the penis), can interfere with fertility.Genetic factors: Certain genetic conditions can affect sperm production or function, leading to infertility. Shared factors: Lifestyle factors: Habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, drug use, and poor diet can all negatively impact fertility in both men and women.Weight: Being overweight or underweight can disrupt hormone levels and affect fertility.Chronic Illness: Conditions such as diabetes, autoimmune disorders, and cancer can impact fertility through various mechanisms.Previous medical history: Previous infections such as mumps or prior surgeries.Environmental factors: Exposure to toxins, pollutants, or radiation can affect reproductive health. What is ICSI?ICSI is a specialised form of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) that was developed, over 30 years ago, to overcome male infertility factors. Unlike conventional IVF, where sperm and egg are combined in a petri dish to aid fertilisation, ICSI involves the direct injection of a single sperm into the egg using a microscopic needle, which is ten times finer than a human hair. We use micromanipulators and high magnification microscopes to perform ICSI. This technique helps fertilisation, even in cases of severe male factor infertility such as low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or abnormal sperm morphology. &nbsp;The <a href="https://youtu.be/ZDYrAdjmhUc" target="_self">ICSI procedure</a>:<ol><li>Ovarian stimulation: A woman / assigned female at birth (AFAB) partner undergoes ovarian stimulation to produce multiple eggs for retrieval, like the initial step in traditional IVF.&nbsp;</li><li>Egg retrieval: Once the eggs are mature, they are retrieved from the ovaries through ultrasound-guided aspiration.&nbsp;</li><li>Sperm collection: Simultaneously, the sperm sample, from the man/ assigned male at birth (AMAB) partner, or donor is prepared in the laboratory to isolate the healthiest and most viable sperm.&nbsp;</li><li>Microinjection: Utilising a specialised micromanipulation technique, one single sperm is directly injected into each mature egg by an expert embryologist.&nbsp;</li><li>Fertilisation and embryo culture: Following microinjection, the fertilised eggs (embryos) undergo close monitoring as they develop in the laboratory for several days.&nbsp;</li><li>Embryo transfer: We can perform a fresh or frozen-thawed embryo transfer. For a fresh transfer, the most viable embryo is selected for transfer into the uterus, typically 4-6 days after fertilisation (at the blastocyst stage), with the aim of achieving a successful pregnancy. Suitable embryos may be frozen (cryopreserved)<del>,</del> and thawed for transfer at a later date. &nbsp;</li></ol>Benefits of ICSI in IVF:<ul><li>Overcoming male factor infertility: ICSI helps individuals and couples going through male infertility issues that would otherwise prevent natural fertilisation.</li><li>Increased fertilisation rates: ICSI results average around 75% of eggs being fertilised. While this doesn’t guarantee conception, it is a slightly higher rate of fertilisation compared to IVF because we place the sperm into the egg rather than it having to make its own way.</li></ul>Is ICSI right for you? Understanding BMI and fertilityYour Body Mass Index (BMI) is a figure that indicates whether you're at a healthy weight for your height.To work out your BMI, you divide your weight (in kilograms) by your height (in meters) squared. BMI is mostly used by healthcare professionals to gauge if your weight is in a healthy range, or ifit's below or above this. For example, if you weigh 65kg and you’re 5 feet 4 inches (=1.63m) tall, your BMI is 24.9kg/m2.The BMI weight categories as determined by the World Health Organization (WHO) are: • below 18.5kg/m2: underweight• between 18.5 and 24.9kg/m2: healthy weight• between 25.0 and 29.9kg/m2: overweight• above 30.0kg/m2: obese BMI is by no means a perfect measure of someone’s health. It only measures someone’s weight anddoesn’t tell us anything about the differences between bone, fat and muscle. For example, very muscly people will often have a high BMI, but that doesn’t mean they are unhealthy.&nbsp;So, what has a person’s BMI got to do with their fertility? Research shows that if your BMI is too low or too high, it can make it tricky to get pregnant. Having a low BMI: If you have a low BMI (under 18.5kg/m2) it can make it harder to have a baby. Your body might not have enough fat to keep your hormones balanced, which for women can disrupt your periods and make it harder to get pregnant. &nbsp;You also need to make sure that you consume enough calories to nourish both yourself and your baby, once pregnancy is established.If you think this might be you, it's a good idea to talk to a doctor about how to get to a healthier weight.Having a higher BMI: On the other hand, if you're BMI is over 25-30kg/m2, it can also affect fertility and make it harder to get pregnant. Carrying more weight also disrupts hormones and cause problems with periods, ovulation, and sperm quality. &nbsp;If you are overweight, you may be around 16% less likely to get pregnant than someone with a healthy BMI and if you are obese, this increases to around 28%.Even just bringing down weight by 5-10% can make a big difference to fertility and chances of pregnancy.Things you can do to help:<ol><li>Talk to a doctor: If you're worried about your weight and how it might be affecting your chances of having a baby, talk to a doctor. Our fertility specialists can help you figure out a plan to get to a healthier weight and improve your chances of getting pregnant.</li><li>Eat well: Make sure you're eating lots of healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grains. These foods help keep your body healthy and can make it easier to have a baby.</li><li>Get moving: Try to do some exercise every day, like walking, dancing, or playing sports. Aim for 150mins/week of which 90mins should be moderate-high intensity aerobic (60-90% max HR). Exercise can help you lose weight if required and helps your body stay strong.</li><li>Prioritise sleep: Sleep is often overlooked yet can have a significant impact on our bodies. Getting a bad night's sleep has now been found to make us make worse health decisions next day such as poorer food choices, increased hunger and calorie intake, and less physical activity. All of these can contribute to weight management and hormone issues. Aim for 8-9 hours of sleep a night and try to go to bed and wake up at roughly the right times.</li><li>Take care of yourself:Trying to have a baby can be stressful, so make sure you're taking care of yourself emotionally too.&nbsp;Cortisol (the stress hormone) and stress related behaviours are the two main factors that make maintaining a healthy weight when stressed harder.&nbsp;Talk to friends or family if you're feeling stressed or consider talking to a counsellor who can help you cope with any worries you might have.</li></ol>Trying to have a baby can be a long and tricky journey, but understanding how your weight affects your chances can help. By eating well, staying active, seeking appropriate medical advice, and taking care of yourself emotionally, you can improve your chances of having a baby and make the journey a little easier. Trying for a baby is a big deal, and sometimes there might be things that are making it harder to conceive.  

One of those things is how much we weigh. Being over or under weight can reduce a person’s fertility and therefore their chances to get pregnant. This is true for both men and women. 

So, let's talk about how Body Mass Index (BMI) and having a baby are connected, and what we can do about it. 

What is endometriosis?&nbsp;Endometriosis is a chronic and progressive condition where tissue like the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) grows outside of the uterus, typically on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other pelvic organs. &nbsp;This tissue behaves exactly like the lining of the uterus, thickening, breaking down, and bleeding with each menstrual cycle. However, because it has no way to exit the body, it becomes trapped, leading to inflammation, pain, and the formation of scar tissue or adhesions.&nbsp;What are the symptoms on endometriosis?&nbsp;<ul><li>Extremely painful periods.</li><li>Pain during sex</li><li>&nbsp;Pain when passing urine or stools.&nbsp;</li><li>Vaginal bleeding when you're not on your period</li><li>&nbsp;Very heavy periods.&nbsp;</li><li>Difficulty conceiving</li></ul>Endometriosis can be hard to diagnose, and whilst periods can be painful for many, if you are experiencing any of the above it’s worth speaking to your doctor to find out more. &nbsp;How does endometriosis impact on fertility?&nbsp;The relationship between endometriosis and fertility is complex. The good news is, is that not everyone&nbsp;with endometriosis struggle to conceive, in fact, it’s estimated around 50-70% of people with endometriosis will have no issues at all. &nbsp;<ol><li>Physical changes: Endometriosis can cause adhesions and scar tissue, which may change the pelvic anatomy, making it difficult for eggs to travel from the ovaries to the fallopian tubes to meet the sperm trying to&nbsp;reach the egg.&nbsp;</li><li>Ovulation disruption: Endometriosis can interfere with ovulation, the release of an egg from the ovary. Eggs need to be released from the ovary before they can be fertilised, without ovulation there is no opportunity for an egg to be fertilised and for a pregnancy to start. &nbsp;</li><li>Inflammation: The chronic inflammation associated with endometriosis can have a big impact on egg quality, implantation, and the overall environment&nbsp;needed for a healthy pregnancy.&nbsp;</li><li>Altered immune response: Endometriosis can affect the immune system, potentially creating a womb that might not allow&nbsp;embryo implantation (when the fertilised egg attaches to the uterus lining)&nbsp;to occur. In short, the immune system will reject the embryo. &nbsp;</li></ol>If you are trying to conceive and have either have an endometriosis diagnosis or think you might have it, there are a variety of things you can do to help you on your journey to becoming a parent. &nbsp; How can I improve my chances of falling pregnant with endometriosis?&nbsp;While there's no guaranteed way to overcome endometriosis-related infertility, there are steps you can take to help improve your chances of conceiving:&nbsp;<ol><li>Healthy lifestyle changes: Focusing on maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and engaging in regular exercise such as going for a walk or doing some online yoga classes. Cutting back on things like smoking and alcohol are also important steps to supporting fertility.&nbsp;</li><li>Avoiding stress: This might feel almost impossible but managing stress is essential for fertility. Cortisol, the stress hormone has an important role to play in keeping us safe but when we have high levels of it all the time, it can be harmful to the body. What is egg freezing?&nbsp;Egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a process where a woman's eggs are collected, frozen, and stored for future use. It offers people the opportunity to preserve their fertility for various reasons, such as career goals, medical treatments, or personal circumstances.&nbsp;Who can freeze their eggs?&nbsp;Women who haven’t gone through the menopause can freeze their eggs. To increase the chances of a successful pregnancy from using a frozen egg, the best time to freeze eggs is in your 20s and early 30s.&nbsp;&nbsp;Age is a crucial factor since egg quality declines with age, making younger women more likely to have viable eggs for freezing. A lower BMI is often associated with better reproductive health and may indicate a lower risk of complications during the egg retrieval process. Additionally, having good quality eggs is essential for successful freezing and later use in fertility treatments.&nbsp;Typically, those who are below the age of 30, have a Body Mass Index (BMI) less than 35, and possess good quality eggs are the most suitable candidates for egg freezing.&nbsp;Understanding the process:&nbsp;The egg freezing process typically involves several stages, that happen in a 2–3-week timeframe:&nbsp;<ol><li>Ovarian stimulation: You'll undergo hormonal injections to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs.</li><li>&nbsp;Egg retrieval: Once your eggs reach maturity (meaning they have developed from a follicle into an egg that can be fertilised), they're retrieved via a minor surgical procedure under sedation, and the quality of the eggs is assessed using our <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/donation/ivf-using-donor-sperm/">Artificial Intelligence</a> <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/donation/ivf-using-donor-sperm/">EggSafe</a><a href="https://www.carefertility.com/donation/ivf-using-donor-sperm/">-AI.</a></li><li>Freezing: Once the eggs have been assessed, they are then frozen using a technique called vitrification, preserving them at sub-zero temperatures.</li><li>Storage: The frozen eggs are stored in a fertility clinic's laboratory until you decide to use them. Storage is an ongoing cost of egg freezing, paid either annually or monthly. More information on costs can be found <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/treatments-services/fertility-preservation/egg-freezing-storage/">here.</a></li></ol>How many times do I need to freeze my eggs?&nbsp;The number of times someone has to go through the egg freezing process will depend on how many mature eggs are collected.&nbsp;The estimated number of mature eggs required to give a high and realistic chance of success at a later date is 15-20 mature eggs. If less than 15 eggs are collected, it will be recommended that patients go through another round. &nbsp;Addressing concerns:&nbsp;1. Success rates: According to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), success rates for egg freezing vary depending on factors such as age and the number of eggs frozen. For women under 35, the chance of a live birth from thawed eggs is around 18-30%. The success rate is often lower than that of IVF from a fresh egg, mostly related to the age, as women using a thawed egg will often be over the age of 35.&nbsp;&nbsp;2. Risks: While egg freezing is generally safe, as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks. These include <a href="https://www.carefertility.com/support/ivf-resource-hub/glossary/">Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS),</a> which occurs in a small percentage of cases, as well as the possibility of no eggs being retrieved.&nbsp;3. Emotional considerations: Deciding to freeze your eggs can evoke a range of emotions, from hope and empowerment to anxiety and uncertainty. Egg donation/egg freezing

Thinking about freezing your eggs can be both empowering and overwhelming. It's a significant decision, and you likely have a multitude of questions and concerns swirling in your mind. Whether you're considering egg freezing for personal or medical reasons, understanding the process, risks, and success rates is crucial. In this blog, we'll delve into the world of egg freezing and address the most common concerns. 

We began IVF in 2020 after three years of trying to conceive. I have endometriosis and the Covid-19 pandemic had struck six months prior, meaning treatments had been delayed which left us feeling sad and frustrated.&nbsp;Finally, we had our first appointment with Care Fertility Sheffield and within a month I had commenced treatment for egg collection. I found the process really stressful; we had lots of ups and downs emotionally and physically. We experienced a lot of desperation and hope. I feel we always thought IVF would work the first time around, after all why wouldn’t it?&nbsp;We gained ten eggs, and four made it to blastocysts. However, after the egg collection I was unwell and Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) was queried. Unfortunately, I ended up in hospital on the day of transfer, and the transfer had to be cancelled. This was soul destroying but on reflection it was the best decision for us. Luckily, I made a full recovery and two months later we transferred our first embryo.&nbsp;On test day, I couldn’t believe my eyes, we had a positive. However, a few days later I experienced a big bleed accompanied by lots of pain. I spoke with the clinic who were very supportive over the telephone, and they said to rest. The next morning, I was beside with worry, and I requested an HCG blood test, this came back on the Friday at close to 4000. I had a repeat blood test 2/3 days later and this had reduced to 700, which I was told by the nurses was a ‘chemical pregnancy’. I hated this term.&nbsp;&nbsp;As I had a positive test, as couple it felt like a loss of a chance to us. Three weeks later I did another pregnancy test, and I found the test was really dark, I went to the clinic for a repeat HCG and it had risen to 600, I had a scan and there was a shadow on my left side. I was referred to the early pregnancy unit.&nbsp;After a few weeks and every other day HCG at the EPU, I was diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy, and I had to decide on methotrexate or having surgery to remove my Fallopian tube. I decided on the methotrexate. Emotionally the ectopic pregnancy took a huge toll on me, and I think it being our first IVF chance it strained us as a couple.&nbsp;&nbsp;In April 2021, I had another embryo transferred and I asked for my progesterone to be checked as I felt it may have been low as I bled early in October. On transfer day my progesterone was found to be very low, therefore, I was given triple progesterone. On test day again, I tested positive, we were more wary this time and aware of what we could lose. Just before five weeks again I had bleeding and my HCG this time did decrease normally.&nbsp;After our second loss, we wanted more tests, I was already having weekly acupuncture and the lady I used at life and lemons was fantastic and talked me through tests that may help to uncover health issues and help us to understand why this was happening to us, and what we could do to increase our chances.&nbsp;I had clotting bloods taken and NK-cell testing. My clotting bloods showed I had immune issues requiring steroids and clotting issues which then meant I needed blood thinning injections for the whole of pregnancy, alongside aspirin. We had to have the bloods repeated after three months which showed I may didn’t require blood thinners; therefore, it wasn’t added to my October 2021 protocol.&nbsp;October 2021, I decided to not use steroids, but to use aspirin instead and to see how the next transfer went. Again, I gained a positive test, but again I bled after test day. My HCG declined as normal.&nbsp;I feel because of the heartbreak and the fear of having another ectopic pregnancy, losing again and it being straightforward didn’t cause as much mental scarring. We enjoyed Christmas together and planned to go again in January 2022.&nbsp;In January 2022, we transferred the last embryo from our first collection, I used aspirin and steroids this time around. This cycle I didn’t gain a positive at all. I felt like this was it for us, we had used our NHS round, and I wasn’t sure if we would ever be parents. I felt the world was against us and it just wasn’t meant to be.&nbsp;&nbsp;We decided to live a little and we booked a holiday to Mauritius, a zika free country just in case we conceived naturally. Whilst we were on holiday, we discussed doing another IVF round and whilst away I contacted the clinic. On landing in the UK, we paid for an IVF multi-cycle treatment with the clinic. I wanted the clotting bloods again as I felt I had a positive for lupus anticoagulant and it had shown as negative on the second set of bloods just three months after. This third set of bloods confirmed I have lupus. Which meant I needed blood thinners throughout the whole pregnancy if successful.&nbsp;In March 2022, I had our second egg collection. I gained nine eggs, and five made it to blastocysts. This time I was well, and I was able to have a transfer. Just before test day I began to bleed again, I did an early test, and this came back as positive. I contacted the clinic and had an HCG test. This came back as 311, and two days later it was 728. Our consultant upped my progesterone, and I was placed on bed rest. I had painful period cramps, and I thought the pregnancy was ending again.&nbsp;At 6 weeks I had a scan, this was early to ensure the pregnancy was in the right place and not ectopic. It was confirmed the pregnancy was in the correct place but there was no heartbeat, so I was asked to return 11 days later. At this point I began bloating and at work I was asked if I was pregnant by colleagues.&nbsp;At 7+4 we went for a scan and unbelievably two little heartbeats were found! The feeling was unreal, it was so exciting but also worrying at the same time. We had identical twins inside on the way!&nbsp;The pregnancy was difficult, I had hyperemesis, gestational diabetes, and I had to walk with crutches due to SPD, low haemoglobin, and even placenta previa at one point. I was scanned every fortnight. There was a worry at one point of twin-to-twin transfusion, but this settled.&nbsp;At 33 weeks I had reduced movements from twin one, I went to be monitored as I was having tightening's which I’d had for a while but this time they were becoming more regular and showing up on the CTG monitor. A vaginal swab confirmed that I was highly likely to go into premature labour within a week. I was admitted to the ward. At 33+5 weeks my waters went, and I was planned for a C-section.&nbsp;During the C-section I had low blood sugars and required a blood transfusion. My baby girls were born at 3lb 8/9ozs. They were whisked off to the Neonatal ward where they stayed for 12 days.&nbsp;&nbsp;I’ve found being a twin mum very difficult, my body endured a lot in pregnancy, and for this reason I would never advocate anyone having more than one embryo transferred. Being a twin parent really does push you to your limits and I have little time for myself, but I do have twice the moments, love, and of course double trouble. Dreams really do come true!&nbsp;We feel extremely lucky to be in this position in life. We do still have four remaining embryos which I don’t think we will use.&nbsp;To get to where we are I’ve had to do hundreds of injections, countless procedures, and endured the heartbreak of loss. But here I am with my two baby girls who are soon to be one year old, feeling incredibly lucky that my life has them in it. You’ll have a test to assess your levels of Antimullerian Hormone (AMH) and an ultrasound scan called an AFC, these will indicate your ovarian reserves, giving valuable insight into how you might manage your own fertility in the future.</li><li>Compensation for your time: all our egg donors receive a payment of £750 per donation cycle to cover any expenses incurred while taking the time to donate.</li><li>Giving someone the precious gift of parenthood: Having IVF treatment with donated eggs can increase chances of success from &lt;5% to potentially over 80%, removing the pain of unsuccessful treatment and miscarriage so you know you’re truly making a difference.</li></ul>How many times will I have to visit a Care Fertility clinic?This will vary slightly from person to person but you will usually visit the clinic between 5-7 times. You will need to visit the clinic for your scans and blood tests, in between these appointments at the clinic, you’ll also have a number of virtual (either telephone or video call) appointments with our lovely donation team. This will be reviewed by one of our doctors, who will decide if you are able to proceed.Phone appointment - You will have a phone appointment with one of our Registered Practitioners in Fertility Care (nurses/ midwives) to go through your forms and discuss the donation process in more detail.Fertility assessment – you’ll come into the clinic for a vaginal scan and a hormone blood test to check how many eggs you have and to scan your womb and ovaries.Further blood tests – to screen for infectious diseases.Counselling session – After you’ve talked through the process with our donation team, we’ll also invite you to meet one of our experienced counsellors. If all is well, things can move quickly; you might start the process as soon as two to four weeks later.Starting treatment – you will begin your injections to stimulate your ovaries. You’ll need to give yourself daily injections for around twelve days, which we’ll teach you how to do.Monitoring – you may have one or two monitoring scans once you have started your stimulating drugs to monitor the progress of your eggs.Egg collection – We’ll collect your eggs during a non-surgical procedure. It is typically done under mild sedation or local anaesthetic; you will not need a general anaesthetic. No incision is made, and no stitches are necessary!Compensation - You will receive your compensation payment within two weeks of your egg collection.Will I need to take time off work to donate?We'll do whatever we can to make sure your donation isn't too disruptive. During the short monitoring stage, we'll need you to attend the clinic on specific days, but the appointments won't take long and can be scheduled to suit you where possible.It will be necessary to take the day off of work on the day of your egg collection. Sometimes, donors feel more comfortable if they also take the next day off after their egg collection, but this is generally not necessary.In reality, you should only have to visit the clinic around six times, but we'll give you as much support as possible to make sure your visits are convenient and stress-free.Will donating my eggs affect my own fertility?No, not at all – and it can give you an insight into your own fertility potential!Women are born with all the egg cells they are ever going to have, between 1 and 2 million. By the time you’re in your 30s, you’ll have around 75,000 eggs left and each month you lose up to 1,000 eggs in a natural cycle, even though only one egg is naturally matured for fertilisation.This means that the eggs we collect during your donation would either have been ovulated or absorbed by your body, and if you donate eggs, you’ll still have thousands of eggs left. Many of our donors even donate more than once.Does egg donation hurt?No, you shouldn't feel any pain. You may feel some discomfort, and of course different people respond differently to medical procedures, but our clinical teams work incredibly hard to keep you as comfortable as possible throughout your donation.In the UK, there is a shortage of egg donors of all ethnicities, and many more eggs are needed to help women and couples to achieve their dream of having a baby.
