Rachel and Amanda’s story

During the winter of 2015, my partner and I decided to embark on our fertility journey. We had decided to contact what was previously known as Bath fertility. Bath were fabulous at offering us an appointment with Mr Nick Sharp and within 5 months from our first appointment on our second round of IUI treatment, our son Oliver was conceived.

From offering us counselling as first-time parents as a same sex couple, to the initial early monitoring once we fell pregnant, we felt very well cared for. Our son was born in early 2017 a healthy full term 9 pounds 6 oz baby. We were in love and felt we could never show our appreciation enough to Bath for helping us create our family.

Fast forward to the winter of 2018 we had decided we would love the chance to try and bring a sibling into the world for our son. We visited what was now known as CARE Fertility and we saw Dr Walker. We decided mutually IUI treatment would be the best treatment plan due to our previous success.

Without your help our arms and heart would not be full.

We had our first round of IUI during the summer of 2019 and to our shock and surprise our first treatment had worked! We were so grateful and thankfully we had a very straightforward pregnancy. It was early 2020, getting toward the end of my pregnancy I contacted our local maternity assessment unit due to reduced movements. Devastatingly, our daughter was showing signs of distress so we were taken down for an emergency caesarean section and our 7 pounds 8 oz girl was born that evening. It was clear that after just a short time of monitoring, our daughter was very poorly and needed an admission to NICU. It was with great sadness that she was too poorly to return home with us, and after 14 very short days, our beautiful girl had grown her angel wings. We were not only grieving the loss of our beautiful girl but during this time the world was being faced with a global pandemic.

When clinics regained procedures and practice again, we had the most heart-warming call with Dr Walker. He showed such empathy and understanding for what we had just been through, and made us feel like we were truly part of the CARE family and not just “a patient”. We discussed potentially starting treatment later in the year again and we felt we had his, and the teams full support to do so.

In late summer of 2020, we felt ready to restart treatment. After 3 rounds of treatment, we had conceived again. And to our absolute joy and shock, we had conceived twins!

We were cared for by a very kind nurse; Julie. Who looked after us throughout all 3 cycles and she truly was our biggest cheerleader who picked us up after each failed round of IUI, never losing faith.

Our rainbow twins were born happy and healthy at 35 weeks gestation in May 2021. We will forever be thankful to every member of Care fertility who have helped us over the years to become a family of 6.
